Purses at Tanforan To Exceed Million Highest of Any Fall Meeting At California Track; Derby Tops 55,000 Stakes List SAN BRUNO, Calif., June 24.— The total stake and purse distribution of the 42 -day meeting opening on September 13 at Tanforan will exceed ,000,000 according to an announcement made today by the tracks vice-president and general manager, Fred H. Ryan. It will be the highest of any fall meeting in the 55-year history of Californias oldest major track. "We estimate our average purse distribution, exclusive of stakes, to be in excess of 0,000 daily and will be adjusted as business volume permits," said Ryan. "With numerous improvements in facilities for the public and the prospect of virtually all the top stables in the southern California area shipping north," added Ryan, "we expect to have the most successful early fall race meeting in our history." Highlighting the 55,000 stakes program will be the revival of the California Derby for three -year-olds at 5,000 added, first run in 1875, and the Tanforan Handicap inaugurated in 1899 for three-year-olds and upward at the same value. Sharing these traditional stakes will also be the California Oaks for three-year-old fillies which was last run. at Tanforan on February 9, 1901. It was won by Green B. Morris Janice, a stable mate of Old England, who became the first California-bred to win the Preakness at Pimlico, in Plti-more. First Run at Sacramento Both the Oaks and the Derby were originally run at the state fair grounds in Sacramento. Considerable research on the part of Tanf orans racing secretary, Barry Whitehead, revealed Hhe prominent part these two stakes played in the thoroughbred, history of this state. They will be reactivated and made permanent fixtures to commemorate the, achievements of Californias pioneer breeding industry. Sharing the traditional pattern will also bd the San Francisco "Handicap, first run in 1901, for three-year-olds and up at 5,000 added and the 5,000 added San Bruno Handicap for two-year-olds which had its inaugural in 1900. | Subject to approval/ by the California Horse Racing Board, the following is the stakes schedule for the meeting: September 18, California Oaks, 5,000, three-year-old fillies, one mile and seventy yards. September 25, Peninsula Handicap, 5,-000, three-year-olds and upward, six furlongs. October 2, Yerba Buena Handicap, 5,-000, three-year-olds, one mile and seventy yards. October 9, San Francisco Handicap, 5,-000, three-year-olds and upward, one mile and one-sixteenth. October 12, El Camino Handicap, 0,000, two-year-olds, six furlongs. October 16, California Derby, 5,000, three-year-olds, one mile and one-eighth. October 23, San Bruno Stakes, 415,000, two-year-olds, one mile and seventy yards. October 30, Tanforan Handicap, 5,000, three-year-olds and upward, one mile and one-eighth.
