Squared Away Bannockburn Victor Extra Points Runs -Unplaced in Chase Mr. Midnight, Real Brother Dead Heat for Place Head Off Mrs. Burkes Sprinter • By J. SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y„ June 24.— Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Away, who had been unsuccessful in four previous starts during -the year, came forth with one of his gallant efforts in the Bannockburn Classified Handicap at Aqueduct today. Leading from immediately after the start of the six-furlong dash he withstood belated challenges from several members of his field to score a head victory over Joseph W. Browns Mr. Mid- /-night and John T. Bradys Real Brother, who finished in a dead heat for runner-up honors. Less than two lengths separated the winner from Howell E. Jacksons Caesar Did, seventh in the classy fieldof 12. Jim Nichols, who had ridden Squared Away in his previous engagements, again *• was astride! the seven-year-old gelded son of Piping Rock and Impertrice. The winner, a candidate for the Carter Handicap, sped the six. panels in 1:11% over the fast strip after which he rewarded his backers .90 in the straight "tote" pool. He received ,950 for his winning effort. The Wheatley Stables Hilarious, who was assigned top weight of 122 pounds, two more than the winner, moved up menacingly entering the stretch, but both he and Ethel D. Jacobs Peter Lane, who also loomed a threat at the furlong marker, were, unable to cope with the top trio. Peter Lane was fourth a half length to the rear of the deadlocked runner-ups. Hilarious was a similar margin removed in fifth place. Track Fast for Bannockburn A crowd of 18,648 passed through the turnstiles to witness the sport, which was presented under ideal weather conditions, but over a strip termed "good" for the first half of the card. As the program progressed the track dried out considerably and was fast for the Bannockburn, which was co-featured with the Amagansett Hurdle Handicap. Lafayette H. Nelles Extra Points encountered his first defeat of the year on a major course in todays eleventh running of the Amagansett Hurdle Handicap"". The sturdy eight-year-old gelded son of Grand Slaim and Briarhone, who had registered five straight victories at Belmont Park, greatly disappointed his numerous backers who sent him postward as the 4-to-5 favorite. Top honors in the about one mile and three-quarters event were captured by Lawrence R. Troianos Williamsburg, who uncorked a . convincing stretch rally to down Mrs. George H. Bostwicks Hyvania by a length. Mrs. Ogden Phipps Neji, coupled with Hyvania, was third one and one-half lengths to the rear of the runner-up and 10 lengths before the Sanford Stud Farms Oneida. Extra Points, within striking distance of the early leaders, was thought by many of the more astute members of the steeplechase set to have received a poorly judged ride from jockey Merlin Fife. The top-weighted favorite, who answered the bugle under a 161-pound impost, was repeatedly guided from the inside to the outside of the course and this added yardage plus his bulky package undoubtedly led to his dismal showing. He was last in the field of seven. Pat Smithwick astride the winner rated his mount to perfection. Under a 151-pound assignment Williamsburg came fast when shaken up for the final test and after taking command won going away to earn the winners share , of ,300 of the gross purse of ,050.
