However, this swift pair of sidewheelers are not the only ones to merit consideration in the battle for pacing honors here. An interesting newcomer to this popular Cicero half-miler, the five-year-old High Frisco, will make his seasonal bow in the two-dash affair and will have the capable Roy Riegle in the sulky. High Frisco was one of the fastest pacers on half-mile tracks during 1953, acquiring a record of 2:02% over the Greenville, Ohio two-lapper. He raced creditably on the Grand Circuit against the most formidable free-for-all competition. His trainer, Riegle, is known for bringing his charges ready and fit to the races so High Frisco must be accorded a fine chance in Fridays feature event. Saunders Mills four-year-old colt, Knox Hanover, on account of his splen- did Maywood Park victory in 2:03, most likely will go to the post as a well-backed public choice. Trainer Don Hall is well satisfied with the colts training moves and probably will have him equipped with a special blinker over his left eye to prevent him from breaking stride when starting on the rail. Countess Vivian, who holds the world record for three-year old pacing fillies with a mile in 1:59 at DuQuoin, according to trainer Mel Harmening has reached peak form and should like the longer stretch here. Miss Shine-A-Mite, Gay Order and BHaven, a fleet trio of local campaigners, round out the classy field, and the latter especially can be depended upon to help set a swift early pace, while Gay Order is one of the strongest finishers ever seen here. Austin Brothers Hlinois-owned-and-bred trotting gelding, Deckwin, winner of his last engagement at Maywood Park, made an auspicious debut here with a double victory in the featured Bnai Brith Trophy, a 16-class trot stakes consisting of two mile dashes. In both heats the five-year-old half-brother to Cliff Win took command early and stayed on top throughout, repelling numerous charges by Clever Tee, Wayaway, Evening Song and Francis Mc. Wilbur Long was in the sulky behind the son of Brookdale, who trotted his miles in 2:06% and 2: 07%. respectively, and added ,750 to his bankroll. The Volomite stallion, Wayaway, finshed second in the first heat, but was a dismal failure in the second dash, making breaks in every quarter, while Clever Tee, who in both heats tried in vain to outsprint Deckwin for the lead, trotted his customary honest race, but seems over his peak form at present, although again getting third-place money in both trips. The battle for leading driver honors will be hard fought. After the first two racing nights here, four drivers were tied for first place with two victories each. Floyd Milton and Russell Britenfield, double winners Monday, were joined by Howard Beissinger and Wilbur Long on Tuesday. If the first two nights here are any criterion of what can be expected at this meeting in the way of attendance and mutuel play, this Chicago Downs session will tumble all records. Tuesdays turn - out numbered 7,347 and the handle 77,338. Wide-open battles for supremacy in the-nations free-for-all pacing and trotting ranks are shaping up, with no horse yet able to demonstrate complete command in either division. Among the pacers, Philip Scott, racing in the metropolitan New York area, has won three in a row and appears best in that region, but he has not yet .raced the national "toughies" presently engaged in a series of 0,000 events in Maryland. On the trotting side, a pair of Long Key mares, Katie Key and Lady Dunn, have won the major share of the early-season accolades, but other trotters also have won in fast time and have beaten these mares. . . . Philip Scott, trained by Frank Safford, is really rolling and has rattled off three in a row at Roosevelt Raceway, the fastest in 2:01%. Most of the other pacing stars have been at Rose-croft and Laurel raceways in Maryland, where Thomas B. Scott, Hillsota and Torrid have annexed 0,000 purses, taking turns whipping each other in the process. Thomas B. Scott won at Rosecroft in 2:01;, a new track record, i Lady Dunn, trained by Harry Miller, has won two 0,000 events at Laurel and beaten Katie Key twice. Katie Key has won two of five, one in new track trotting: record time, 2:03% at Rose-, croft, the other a 5,000 win in 2:03% at Roosevelt last week. Anthony Hanover and Jamie also have annexed 0,-000 trotting wins, while Red Sails and Scotch Spencer have posted- rich pacing victories, the latter winning: the 5,400 Roosevelt Special. When Pronto Don, leading active money winner, rounds into his peak trotting form, and if last years Harness Horse of the Year, Hi-Los Forbes, recovers from lameness and returns to the pacing wars, a further winners* circle shake-up in both; divisions could take place.
