Blue Blue Hawaii Hawaii Takes Takes Cinderella Cinderella Purse; Purse; Mabs Mabs Choice Choice Triumphant Triumphant in in Distaff Distaff Nips Sunshine Nell With Closing Rush New Stake at Aqueduct Run In Fast Time; On Your Own Is Eleventh to Howard Mare By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 28. Closing with a furious rush on the outside, R. S. Howards Mabs Choice scored her first victory in two years when she captured the first running of the 0,050 Distaff Handicap by a half length over Meyer J. Kaplans favored Sunshine Nell today. Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Brazen Brat finished well to be third, another three and a half lengths behind the favorite and a head before C. V. Whitneys Carry the News. Though she had raced creditably in her last three starts, Mabs Choice was widely neglected by the crowd of 20,727, paying 3.30, 1.60 and ,20 across the board. Overcomes Inside Post Disadvantage Angel Valenzuela rode the five-year-old daughter of Royal Charger-Tidings, by Knight of the Garter, and had to overcome what aws for her the serious disadvantage of the inside post position, having to drop back to 10th place before being able to get to the outside, where she is willing to run. This first edition of the Distaff was run in 1:24 for the seven furlongs, excellent time in view of the dead track, which was i not helped by a brief shower that fell during the running of- the fifth race. Mabs Choice, who is trained by Charley Whit-tihgham, carried 109 pounds, including one extra, and was receiving 17 pounds from Sunshine Nell, 16 from Brazen Brat and three from Carry the News. The stake netted 0,000 to Howard, a Californian, which is more than Mabs Choice had earned in 26 previous starts in 1953 and 54. Those efforts had gleaned 9,250. Jim Nichols sent Emardee to the front at the start of the Distaff .and quickly opened a daylight lead over Miss Weesie and Gains-boro Girl, who was shuffled back slightly at Continued on Page Fifty-Two Mabs Choice Wins Distaff at Aqueduct Howard Mare Gets Up to Nip Sunshine Nell With Furious Rush Through Homestretch Continued from Page One the far turn and continued to be in close quarters to the stretch. Meanwhile, Outsmart was close to the leaders, followed by Sunshine Nell, while Brazen Brat and Mabs Choice were far back. Emardee continued to set a fairly rapid pace to the head of the stretch, where Sunshine Nell surged up to take command and Carry the News worked her way into contention. Brazen Brat had moved into fifth place at the three-furlong pole, but Mabs Choice was still far out of it, though the field was beginning to bunch. Sunshine Nell took a half length lead at the furlong pole, while Mabs Choice was still in sixth place, but was only about four lengths behind the favorite and responding willingly to Valenzuelas urging. Despite Arcaros powerful drive and her own unlimited courage, Sunshine Nell was unable to stave off the lightweights closing rush and Mabs Choice caught her two strides from the wire, and was drawing" away at the finish. Brazen Brat also finished well, while Carry the News hung after being second at the eighth- .pole. Gainsboro Girl finished fifth after a rather rough trip, followed by Home-Made and the weary Emardee. King. Ranchs On Your Own, who last week beat Evening Out " in the Gazelle Stakes, was the disappointment of the Distaff, finishing 11th in the field of 12, and stopping badly aftef three furlongs. Maine Chance Farms Fascinator and Incidentally were scratched this morning. Palm Tree Disqualified Four candidates for Saturdays 0,000 Dwyer Stakes and two other three -year-olds met in the Cant Wait Purse at aunile and one-sixteenth. Greentree Stables Palm Tree won the race by almost two lengths over Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Paper Tiger, but was disqualified and placed last for bearing out in the stretch and interfering with the runner-up. The stewards decision moved Llangollen Farms Porterhouse, who had finished another four lengths away, into second place and allowed third money to Joe W. Browns Bobby Brocato, who was another two and one-half lengths behind Porterhouse. Fourth money went to Browns Gigantic. Palm Tree was eased by between the final turns while racing on the rail, then bore out when he came on again, carrying Paper Tiger wide at the furlong bend an in the upper stretch. Paper Tiger, a Dwyer eligible, paid 6.80, while Palm Tree required 1:47 for the mile and one-sixteenth. George Glassner rode the Stymie colt and was given moral support in his foul claim by trainer Hirsch Jasobs, while Ted Atkinson was astride Palm Tree. By Jeepers and Bobby Brocato fought .for the early lead several lengths before Porterhouse, who was lapped on Palm Tree, while Paper Tiger and Gigantic brought up the rear. Porterhouse fell back between the turns, while By Jeepers stopped abruptly turning for home, and Palm Tree moved to the outside just as Paper Tiger came up with a strong challenge. Palm Tree, who wears a runout bit, carried Paper Tiger out and left him there, then went on to score with short-lived authority. Porterhouse appeared to "run in spots," rallying slightly in the stretch after appearing about to drop out of contention turning for home. The first three in the original finish are all eligible to the Dwyer, but gave no indication that they will be able to trouble High Gun in that mile and one-quarter.
