NFL Announces 72-Game Schedule for 1954 Season Pro Grid Loop Starts Sept. 26; TV Program Not Yet Drawn Up PHILADELPHIA, Pa., June 28, UP. Commissioner Bert Bell of the National Football League today announced a 72-game schedule for the leagues 12 teams this coming season. The league will usher in its 35th season with six afternoon-games on Sunday, Sept. 26, and will close the regular season on Sunday, Dec. 12. Two weeks later, the title-holders iifthe Eastern and Western conferences will meet in the home city of the eastern team for the league championship. The schedule includes nine Saturday night games, two on Saturday afternoon and one on Thanksgiving Day morning. The remaining 60 games will be played Sunday afternoons. , The Detroit .LionSi defepdlns league champion, will defend the Western Conference title against the Baltimore Colts, Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. The Cleveland Browns will defend its Eastern Conference championship against the Chicago Cardinals, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins. Green Bay will play" two Sunday afternoon games and one Saturday night game at Milwaukee. The league has not as yet drawn up a schedule of the games which will be tele-tvised. "
