Six Omaha Winners In Madison Purse Forgotten Miss, Rose Beam Meet for Third Time; Just Judy, Roman Secret Named BY DEAN WILLIAMS Staff Correspondent AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., June 28. The Madison Purse on Tuesday afternoons card is the type of race that lias helped make the 1954 season at Ak-Sar-Ben even more successful than the preceding record-breaking years. The mile and a sixteenth allowance affair boasts six winners in the field of nine. Those who have reached the Ak-Sar-Ben winners circle are. Mrs. Sadie Foleys Just Judy, A. Knights Rose. Beam, Fred Wyses Andromeda, Mrs. Earl Beezleys Forgotten Miss, C. Ettenspergens Roman Secret, and C. J. Manns Knowable. Of these, Just Judy, Roman Secret and Rose Beam have been fortunate enough to visit the charmed enclosure twice. Magic City, Mr. JFavor and Starlon have yet to win over the local strip. This will be the third occasion in which Forgotten Miss and Rose Beam have matched strides, each having been able to subdue the other in winning efforts as the other was a very close second. Their first meeting found Rose Beam getting up in the final strides to beat the Beezley colorbearer the narrowest of noses at the end of a mile and 70 yards jaunt. The tables were turned just a week later at the same distance as Forgotten Miss outfinished the son of Blenheim n. as they both made a belated rush as they came from tar off the pace. Rose Beam again will have the services of the leading rider of the current meeting, Wendell Leeling. Leeling was aboard the Knight runner when he took the measure of his arch rival, Forgotten Miss, in his top performance. These two are a winning combination hard to beat. Roman Secret Sent Mile Last Out Roman Secret, who won the Inaugural i Handicap, was sent over a mile for the first time in this years campaigning in his most i recent start. In this effort he was bet down to a prohibitive favorite and finished third to Forgotten Miss and Rose Beam. He may have been able to handle the distance much 1 better, but was forced to run the first three- 1 quarters of a mile in 1 : 10, which is apt to make the best of them become tired at the 3 end of a mile and 70 yards journey. The f son of Roman could redeem himself if the 1 pace was less torrid in Tuesdays feature. The afternoons co-feature is the second ? running of the Nebraska Breeders Special. i The ,575 added money stakes at one mile 1 and a sixteenth drew a 14 horse field headed by Sergeant Sam, last years Ak-Sar-Ben Futurity winner, and Th Snapper. The c Breeders Special gives the three-year-old 1 entrants their first chance to prove them- E selves at a distance over a mile. The skeptical were convinced that J. K. Houssels Lefty James is the best horse that has ever gone to the post at Ak-Sar-Ben. . The equaling of the three-quarters track 1 mark, which had held since 1938, and the setting of a mile and sixteenth record of 1:42, a second and two-fifths under the previous mark, was proof to the skeptics. As if to prove his greatness even further, he picked up a 125 pounds and thrilled the fans as he won the George Brandeis Memorial Handicap. The son of Bull Reigh seemed destined to an easy win as he opened a five-length margin as he ran the first three-quarters of the race in 1:09. That wide margin was eaten up in the matter of a second as Gunner Lad made his move and had Lefty James beaten by a half-length margin entering the stretch. Then another view was taken that he had. gone too swiftly and was certain to go down to defeat, tut such was hot the case. He showed his gameness and courage by coming on again. When the photo was hung the Houssels runner was the winner by the shortest of noses. ,1 i r
