Wiffie Smith Wins First-Round Match in British Womens Open G ANTON, England, June 28 UP .Margaret "Wiffie" Smith, .a trim little teenager from Pasadena, Calif., and the only U. S. entrant, scored a resounding 6 and 5 victory today over Mrs. A. Eloy of France in the first round oi the British Womens Open Gold Championship. Miss Smith, 17, who. reached the semifinals of last years U. S. Womens Open, astounded the small gallery with herpow-eiful tee shots. Marlene Stewart of Fonthill, Ont., the defending champion, scored a 3 and 2 victory over Anne Scargill of England, despite the fact that she was off her game. Miss Smith, who is combining a vacation with her ambitious bid for the British golf crown, is expected to meet Miss Stewart in the third round. Both are favored over lesser-light opponents in Tuesdays match play. Experts believe the tournament winner will emerge from their match.
