Saratoga Has Five Foes In 8,550 Providence Narragansett to Offer Only "Win Wagering on Route Stake By J. N. LYON Staff Correspondent NARRAGANSETT PARK, Paw tucket. R. I.. June 21. Six three-year-olds were named through the entry box this morning for Wednesdays 5,000 added Providence Stakes at a mile and a furlong and what had momentarily appeared to be a "romp" for Montpeliers Saratoga has now become a real race. With all six named going postward, this 10th running of the sophomore event will have a gross purse of 8,550 of which the winner will net 5,200. With Saratoga considered a heavy odds-on choice in the Providence Stakes the management has announced that there will be win wagering only on the event and that the program will present 10 races. M. Gettinger. J Conditions of the Providence call for weights to be assigned by money won, which consequently makes Mrs. Marion duPont Scotts star - highweight at 123 pounds, conceding, from 11 to V7 pounds to the remainder of the field. The high point in Saratogas career undoubtedly came in the Preakness, where he raced the great Nashua to a one length decision, and then only conceding the victory in the last few strides. The colt followed that effort1 with a smashing performance in the mile and a furlong Leonard Richards Stakes at Delaware Park where he toyed with his opposition in a front-running victory. In taking down the 5,500 winners share of the purse in the Richards, Saratoga was timed in 1:51 over a racing strip labelled "sloppy." Saratoga got in all his pre-race training at Delaware prior to arriving here Sunday but was given an easy blowout this morning, breezing threeeighths in :37 with assistant trainer Joe Mergler witnessing the move. Misty Morn proved to be a surprise entry. The decision to ship the sprightly miss north was not made until Monday noon. The daughter of Princequillo Grey Flight was then placed in a van and arrived at Narragansett Park at noon today, following an uneventful trip from Aqueduct. The appearance of Misty Morn for the Providence marks the first time this year that the Wheatley colors have been in competition in New England. Winner og Three Straight at Belmont Misty Morn enjoyed her greatest success this year at the recent Belmont Park meeting where she annexed three straight races. Her greatest effort came in an overnight allowance event at a mile and one-sixteenth here. She. turned back such good fillies as In Reserve and Lalun while being timed the distance in 1:42, just a second removed from the existing world record and breaking a track record of 32 years standing. The manner in which the Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps star performed racing far back of the leaders for the first half mile or so, and then making a belated bid through the stretch, would suggest that she will more than make her presence known in this field and just perhaps catch the tiring speed horses. Ted Atkinson is to fly in from New York and will handle the Sunny Jim Fitzsim-mons-trained filly who gets in with just 106 pounds. Chris Cross, one of the most improved young colts on the grounds, is fresh from a victory over the fashionable Star Rover during the closing week of the Suffolk Downs meeting. The colt in annexing the ,500 winners share of the Constitution Handicap covered the mile distance in 1:37 while carrying 113 pounds and lead- ing the Gusheri colorbearer under the wire by a neck. Tomorrow finds the son of Free for All Style Shop getting in with just 111 pounds. Mr. Al L., third to Nashua in the Belmont Stakes, displayed some of his speed in that event for he raced with the leaders for a mile and one-quarter and could consequently be counted upon forcing the pace that Saratoga will undoubtedly be making Wednesday. The Stymie colt will be asked to carry 111 pounds Wednesday. Colbert and Hidden Ship pose a difficult problem in assessing their capabilities against this field for the former was a maiden until last week arid the latter in addition to being a filly has not yet this year lived up to the good form she enjoyed as a two-year-old. , j
