High Gun Displays Speed in Workout Reels Off Five Furlongs In :59 in Preparation for Carter Cap Engagement AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 21. The King Ranchs High Gun, who is expected to renew his rivalry with William G. Helis, Jr,s Helioscope in the 0,000 added Carter Handicap, took to the Belmont Park strip this morning and reeled off an impressive five furlongs in :59. The four-year-old son of Heliopolis Rocket Gun stepped the initial quarter in :23Vs. three-eighths in :35, the half in :47 flat, and after completing the five panels galloped out six furlongs in 1:13. According to those witnessing the splendid trial the colt was eased considerably nearing the termination of his assignment. High Gun made his last start in the rich Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park in which he was bested a short head by Helioscope while attempting to concede his rival five pounds. High Gun shouldered 133 pounds in the mile and one-quarter event. Helioscope carried 128. Weights for the Carter, which will be decided over the Aqueduct track Monday, July 4, have not been released. In contrast to the Suburban the Carter will be contested at the sprint distance of seven furlongs. Jet Action from the Maine Chance Farm this morning was one of the standouts on the main track. He breezed along smartly I and was timed one mile in 1:40. The first part was on the slow side, the half was timed in 50 seconds and the six furlongs 1:16. However, from that marker to the finish line, the Jet Pilot Busher four-year-old increased his speed and finished out in a hurry. Jet Action is an Edgemere Handicap eligible which is the salient offering of the week end program. Maharajah, Greentree Stables Edgemere eligible, was sent over the mile distance on the main track this morning in preparation for his engagement. Maharajah was timed in 1:40 and the work was a pleasing one to trainer John Gaver. The gray-coated four-year-old worked evenly and was at all stages fell within himself. Usually Off Day at Belmont Tuesday as a rule is an off day at the Nassau County plant, but this morning proved an exception. Candidates for the week end offerings and overnight races were much in evidence. Edward M. Las-kers Lychnus, another nominee for the Edgemere, which, by the way, is over the mile and one furlong distance with an endowment of 5,000, was sent six furlongs in 1:13 in handy fashion under the watchful eye of Max Hirsch. The latter also named High Gun for the dash but this fellow was declared several days ago and thus was not weighted and became ineligible. Trainers took full advantage of the training track surface this morning and several creditable "runs" were reported. The training track will come in for severe pounding in the next few days, for the main track will be closed to operations. The annual presentations, "The Night of Stars", for the benefit of the Long Island hospitals, will be staged on Friday and Saturday and the settings jut out over the main track. The problem of tearing down and erecting after each performance proves too much of a task, hence the closing of the racing strip for three days. The best performance over the little track was turned in by Tarjoman at one mile. This fellow is an English importation in the menage of Eleonora Sears and trained by Jimmy Smith. Tarjoman is a full brother to the Irish-bred hero, Tulyar, by Tehran from Neocracy. The alien was impressive -in his mile trial, which was accomplished in 1:43, with the following fractions: :49, 1:15 and 1:29. Trainer Smith is bringing his aliens, which were acquired by Eleonora Sears at private treaty in England, along at a steady pace and in his usual conservative manner predicts that by the fall they will be better acclimated and at or near peak form.
