i Notables Throng Post, Paddock Opening Day Society Out in Large Numbers For Arlington Park Inaugural ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights 111., June 21. The Post and Paddock Club of Arlington Park Jockey Club celebrated its 29th anniversary Monday with perfect weather and practically record-breaking attendance. All in all it was a golden day ! First there was the brilliant sunshine. Then the pleasing prices of the mutuel returns. Also, that gourmands delight, the beautiful buffet table. Rich wtih delicacies of all kinds. Another point of 18-karat gold intensity was the presence of a large number of wealthy widows. If the total of their assets could be estimated they would probably exceed by 20 times, the value of the exceptional purses that Benjamin F. Lindheimer distributes throughout the co-ordinated Arlington Park-Washington Park meetings. Many of their late -husbands were founding members of the Post and Paddock. To list a few there was blonde and beautiful Mrs. Laurance Armour, whose late husband was president of the Posta and Paddock for 22 years, and who on Monday was accompanied by Mrs. Donald Ryerson, another widow -of wealth, and Mrs. Howard Linn. Mr. Linn who had spent the morning with her dentist, made a mad dash to get to the track in time. Mrs. Burt L. Atwater another woman, recently bereaved, was on hand with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Cox Atwater; her sister, Mrs. Olive Sleeper, their schoolmate since they were 10 and 12 years old, Mrs. Mary Holmes. Turning into the "Bs" there was Mrs. Bertha Baur, long known as "Mrs. Republican Party." List also the widow of another founding member, Mrs. George E. Van Hagen, who was accompanied by her lovely daughter, Elisabeth, and her brother, William Lewis. Her grandson, George E. Van Hagen III. and A. D. Plamondon HI. are in charge of the Arlington Park Hurdle Stakes that will be run on Friday sponsored by the Midwest Hunts Racing Association. Mrs. Benjamin R. Brown is another. The late Mr. Brown was a devotee of Arlington and his widow never misses a day at the track, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. C. R. Blair. A half dozen of the rampant white horses, left over from Saturdays Summer Ball accented the beautiful clusters of yellow flowers in the lounge and the lower dining room. All of their friends were elated over the news that John Denby Allen, president of Arlington, has a new granddaughter born Friday to his youngest son, Denby Allen and Mrs. Allen. The baby weighed eight pounds and will be named Linda Lou after her mother and her paternal grand mother, Mrs. John Canepe. Judge John OConnell had a party that included his daughter, Miriam and her husband, Thomas R. Hammond, and his mother, Mrs. Thomas Hammond Add. another to the golden widow group! and Mrs. John L. Kellogg. The Charles Murphys were, there with Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Collins. Mr. and Mrs. John Cuneo were on hand. Another on the golden widow group was Mrs. R. Cooper, Jr. The Charles Seth-nesses, Jr. were with the Ed Simses. Mrs. Frederick W. Specht also attended. George Russell Carr, president of the Post and Paddock club, entertained in honor of the French consul, Jean Charles Moise Strauss, and Mme Strauss. His guests included his nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Carr, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Marsh, and Mrs. Francis P. Olds. Others were Mrs. Frank Lagorio another widow, her daughter, Mrs. John Mc-Guire and her daughter, Carlotta McGuire, Mrs. Horatio Hackett, widow of the gen- 1 eral, Mr. and Mrs. John Canepa, Col. and A Mrs. Leon Mandel and Carola; Maj. and J Mrs. Ednyfed Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Frank I Bering, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Petersen; Mrs. John Mitchell Hutchins, Mrs. John R. Thompson, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Louis Van Engers; Mrs. Frank Miller, Mr. and Mrs. James Baggott, their daughter, Mileste and Mrs. Baggotts sister, Mrs. Mildred -Murphy Hurley another in the golden widow list ; Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Lindheimer, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel I Perl-man, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Ogden Ketting. To conclude the "golden widow" roster, there was Mrs. Maryland Hooper McCor-mick, widow of the late Col. Robert R McCormick, accompanied by her daughter, Alice Hooper. Mrs. Harry Lobdell another on the widow list her husband was a founding member, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Wright, Jr., were with his maternal aunt, Mrs. Samuel Krom and Mr. Krom, Mrs. Walter Monroe was with her son and daughter-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. Walter Monroe, Jr. All in all it was a golden day I
