Laurel international to Have 1 French Jockey Clubs Support Will Come From Running of Free Handicap and Arc de Triomphe, Schapiro Told LAUREL, MdC June 21. The Societe dEncouragement of France The Jockey Club has placed its weight behind the Washington, D. C. International at Laurel Race Course on November 11. At Chantilly, near Paris, where he witnessed both the French Derby and Oaks, Laurel president John D. Schapiro was assured by Count Gaston Niel, president of the Societe dEncouragement, and his stewards that they will lend all of their support to the race. In addition, they proposed a toast to Schapiro as the organizer of the worlds truly international race, a great tribute to the Maryland event. The French support will come from two events. On July 29, in the Prix de La Pelouse Free Handicap, the Longchamp handicapper, representing the Jockey Club of France, classifies the winners of the season. The list will serve as a yardstick for Schapiros committee and likewise indicate to the owners of the leading thoroughbreds that their horses are potential candidates. This compilation -is augmented by the Prix de lArc de Triomphe, raced at Longchamp on October 9. The famous classic is a second and very important guide in fixing the definite French choices. Follows Action Taken by English This action plus that taken by the Jockey Club of England last week in requesting its senior handicapper, Geoffrey Freer, to publish a list of the 10 best horses later in the summer as an aid to Schapiro when i the time comes to invite the English rep-j resentatives, puts three European-countries on record as being solidly behind the Washington, D. C. International. For the past two years, the Irish Turf Club Jockey Club, through its secretary. Brigadier E. T. Boylan, has cooperated in a similar fashion. , In England, the race corresponding to the Arc de Triomphe is the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, to be held this year at Ascot on July 16. This event, the English Derby and Freers list will be Laurels principal guide in extending invitations to the English horses. During Schapiros first visit to Chantilly, he was invited by Niel and his stewards to a champagne cocktail toast in his honor. The French racing daily, Sport Complet, headlined its stoiy on the occasion "Franco-American Friendship." A few days later, Schapiro returned the honor and was host to the same officials and some 40 members of the French racing press. At the- last-named gathering, Schapiro addressed the group in French after proposing a toast to the Societe dEncouragement. He cited the fact that an English horse, Wilwyn, won the .first running of the International; a French horse, Worden n., captured the second, and an American representative Fisherman annexed the third. Schapiro emphasized Laurels efforts to be impartial in selecting starters because the race has become "a championship test." He spoke of the cooperation he is receiving from the Jockey Club in England and the Dublin Jockey Club in Ireland. Laurels head then told of his audience with Queen Elizabeth saying: "Her Majesty told us she hoped that in the future one of her own horses in her colors would again take part in the Washington, D. C. International." He then thanked those in the gathering for their help, adding: "Our race is another vehicle in the construction of good will and friendship between nations. It also proves that there are many people from many countries who have many common interests and pursuits."
