Classy Line-Up of Fifteen Sophomore Fillies in Pimlicos Black Eyed Susan Jota Jota, Pillow Talk and Cousin Con Vie at Route in Marylands 4,800 Fixture By CHARLES HATTON PIMLICO. Baltimore, Md., May 14.— A brilliant field of 15 three -year-old fillies was named today to compete for the 4,-800 Black-Eyed Susan, once famous as the Pimlico Oaks, as Preakness week on the nostalgic Old Hilltop advances to its Wednesday program. The Ashland winner Jota Jota, the Kentucky Oaks runner-up Pillow Talk, the local favorite Cousin Con, and Federal Hills surprising nemesis La Verite head the array of talent assembled for this classical mile and a sixteenth. If all the field face starter Eddie Blind, the winner will receive a gross prize of 7,800, of which the not inconsiderable sum of 7,750 is net. This is the races thirty-sixth running. It is difficult to pick the favorite, to say nothing of the winner, though Pillow Talks name is often mentioned. The lightly raced daughter of Mr. Continued on Page Three ► i I DONALD ROSS— His Brandywine Stable homebred, Summer Song, starts in the Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico today. ♦ ♦- ► i Classy Field of Fifteen Fillies In Pimlico s Black Eyed Susan i j ] 1 1 I j | j , ] j j j , j , , | | , | | i , Jota Voter, Pillow Talk and ? ► Cousin Con Vie at Route in Marylands 4,800 Fixture Continued from Page One Trouble created a good impression beating the clever Nile Lily in the Kentucky Oaks Prep, and she was the only member of the Kentucky Oaks field to offer much resistance to the successful Lori-El, who is not engaged in the Black -Eyed Susan. Under the terms of the MJCs filly special, each of the field will carry 121 pounds. There is a disposition to discount Jota Jotas lustreless showing in the Kentucky Oaks and a good deal of backing may develop for Capt. Harry Guggenheims beautiful brown daughter of Double Jay. Her name is Spanish for J. J. V After giving Lori-El short shrift in the Ashland, Jota Jota found the somewhat cuppy Downs footing unsuitable and did not extend herself, moreover was in trouble repeatedly during that mile and a sixteenth. Her ankles have given trouble but she is meant for a top quality filly. She was second, at a respectful distance, to Alanesian in last summers Spinaway. It was in the Biscayne Bay Handicap back at Gulfstream Park that La Verite astonished everybody by scratching home ahead of the extraordinarily fast colt Federal Hill, one of the leading aspirants for the upcoming 81st Preakness. The daughter of Roman Bout has" since rather anti-climaxed that form, however, as she was beaten off recently at Garden State Park. Capelet and Cousin Con were stakes winners at two last season, the former winning the important Frizette Stakes up at Jamaica, the latter the Jeanne dArc in New England. Capelet, a daughter of the sprinting Bolero, has trained well since her unsuccessful sophomore debut. Cousin Con carried her weight and "beat nothing" at the Black Eyed Susan route here at Pimlico the other day. She gave away weight and led from end to end, and she doubtless will have much support from among the Pimlico regulars. Woodlawn Invader From Kentucky Woodlawn has come up from Kentucky especially to fill her Black Eyed Susan engagement. She was a winner back at Gulf-stream Park and as a two-year-old won the Polyanna Stakes. Certifying she is of stakes class she also finished third in the Mademoiselle. She is expected to be something of an outsider here, however. For the most part the others of the field are allowance fillies. They may improve, must to win, and have ample room in which to improve. Brabant Rose could have some play with Joe Culmone up. Ted Atkinson is to handle Therapy, and Sidney • Cole has been "imported" for Don Ross • rangy chestnut Summer Song. It is difficult to work up a convincing lather of enthusiasm . for Slipperoo, Jerilynn, Mandalay Miss. Evening Time and Cloud Nine. None of the bonafide stakes performers I among the three-year-old fillies to have . raced thus far in the young season has J seemed able to put two really distinguishing . performances together. Leallah, the , champion of this generation in 56, has yet [ to make her debut. The same applies to Romanita and Lebkuchen, while Miss Blue , Jay has been beaten. Perhaps the Black Eyed Susan will reveal a serious contender for the seasons honors:* This race, along with the Kentucky Oaks and Belmonts j CCA. Oaks, comprise Americas "Triple Crown for Fillies." The Black Eyed Susan last spring found the all conquering Calumet colors first and second, atop Princess Turia and Beyond. The stable has no representative in this renewal. Rosewood having failed to inspire any confidence in "Mayor Jimmy" Jones that she is sufficiently educated and professional to concern herself with the result. The track remained fast when entries were taken this morning, but the course was enveloped in low scudding clouds and it is anybodys guess what conditions will obtain for the running of the Maryland Jockey Clubs coveted three-year-old filly feature.
