Mass., May 14.— Varicolored poles will be installed around the infield turf course prior to the opening of Suffolk Downs 35-day spring meeting Tuesday. May 21. Suffolk thus will be among the few tracks in America with poles on the grass strip, permitting fractional times to be taken for the turf events. The poles, which also will serve as a guide for fans and jockeys, will follow the pattern of those on the main course, according to judge John C. Pappas, president of the track. Turf course racing, which has become increasingly popular in New England, will be featured throughout -the Suffolk session. The highlight of the grass agenda will be the third running of the 5,000-added John R. Macomber Memorial Handicap June 17. • In additional, the 0,000 Plymouth Rock Handicap June 8 will be decided on the grass, while three of the six races in the Olympian Series for routers also are scheduled for the turf course. Racing secretary Gordon Morrow plans several overnight grass events, too. Track superintendent Joe Tomasello is president supervising final work on the grass strip for the opening of the Suffolk meet. The turf course here is rated among the finest in the country.
