New Infield Turf Course Being Built at Del Mar DEL MAR, Calif., May 14. — A new infield turf course, now nearing completion, will be ready for the July 24 opening of Del Mar, it was announced today by president Don Smith. The course, which follows the main dirt track adjacent to the inner rail, measures just 374 feet less than one mile. A 660-foot straightaway chute placed diagonally from the far turn to a point in front of the grandstand will enable Del Mar to program races of a mile and one furlong on the new grass course. It will give spectators a dramatic view of race action as a field gallops straight toward the stands before swinging onto the oval part of the grass track, and makes the -Del Mar course unique in American racing. With the addition of the new course, Del Mar becomes the second race track in the Far West to present grass racing Santa Anita Park pioneered turf course racing in California four years ago and its acceptance by racing fans and horsemen was immediate and overwhelming. "We earnestly believe the infield turf course will prove a big hit with our patrons," Smith commented. "After all, racing is a form of entertainment and the grass track will enable Del Mar to diversify its program."
