Fleurlea Impressive Jamaica Victress ♦ Sets Entire Pace In Route Offering Son of Erin Takes Measure Of Grover B., Gold Bell II. In Days Companion Feature JAMAICA. L. I.. N. Y.. May 14.— Taking the track as though she owned it, Ralph Lowes Fleurlea made a parade of the Larchmont Purse, first of todays feature races. With apprentice Edward J. Decker appearing to enjoy the ride, Fleurlea coasted to the finish two lengths before Brookmeade Stables Floral Park, the odds-on choice. It was another five lengths back to Morty Freedmans Gay % Life, while Harry L. Koplins Lovely Wave, who completed the small field, was spaced off another 18 lengths in arrears by the camera. Third choice with the cloudy day crowd of 19,931, Fleurlea paid .20 and romped the mile and a furlong in 1:51%. It was the first victory of the year for the six-year-old daughter of Bull Lea from Blue Lily, by Blue Larkspur, in six starts. Fleurlea had finished second to Floral Park in her last outing and was behind Gay Life before that, but benefitted by substantial wandght shifts in relation to both fillies. Young Decker rushed Fleurlea into a seven-length lead in the opening quarter, followed by Gay Life and Floral Park, while Lovely Wave was unable to keep up with the moderate pace. In the run down the backstretch. Floral Park moved into second place, but was not particularly urged by Eddie Arcaro. while Decker was able to give Fleurlea a breather rounding the far turn, though still some five lengths in the van. Floral Park Makes Bid Nearing the final bend, Floral Park made I a threatening bid that encouraged the , favorite players, but Fleurlea was still full I of run and had no difficulty at all in hold-. ing the Brookmeade filly safe. Gay Life. . who apparently cannot carry an impost j such as the 120 pounds she had today, , turned in a very dull race. An odds-on choice was again beaten in r the co-featured Amityville Purse and in similar style when Bill Boland sent Mrs. Jan Burkes Son of Erin to the lead at the J start of the mile and one-sixteenth and still had some speed in reserve when he ; reached the finish two lengths before W. F. Morgans Heavily favored Grover B. By Coincidence, Eddie Arcaro, who won the . sixth race on Superb, was on both Grover B. and Floral Park, the odds-on choices who finished second in the two features. It was another two lengths back to M. Mac- • Schwebels Gold Bell II., who led B. and M. • Stables Bunnys Babe by a length and one-half. Second choice in the wagering, ; Son of Erin paid .90 after stepping the J distance in 1:45 5. Son of Erin took command leaving the gate in the Amityville and was only ser-, iously roused turning for home, when Grover B. loomed up on the outside and ; Bunnys Babe made a move along the rail, then swung to the extreme outside. • Through the final sixteenth, Boland had • only to keep the Sun Again geldings head , up as Grover B. sought vainly to catch him. Gold Bell II. came from far back to take third honors, while Bunnys Babe appeared to lose traction in the deep footing I when leaving the rail to make his challenge. It is doubtful, however, that he J would have been able to find racing room had he stayed on the rail. Alibhai Lashes forced the winners early pace, with Grover B. taking over that role , nearing the far turn, hut never being able to seriously menace Cary Winfreys charge, who was scoring his second straight here. Jockey Hedley Woodhouse had one of the narrowest escapes of his career in the second race when his mount, Lila Phillips aptly named No Lady, bore out and ran up on the heels of Lottie Wolfs Sweet Buddy near the three -furlong pole. Woodhouse lost his left iron and the filly almost went down with 10 horses charging directly be- Continued on Page Fifty-Two Fleurlea Ahead Throughout In Jamaica Distance Feature Continued from Page Three hind her, but miraculously retained his seat and was able to ease the filly up in safety. Ted Atkinson won the race with a late charge on Ethel D. Jacobs Connie Stella, who scored by a neck over T. F. Whites Whisk Tru, who led Mrs. Phil Biebers Helaman by a half length, while Rokeby Stables Djerid was only a neck out of the money. Connie Stella paid .40 straight and combined with Ace Mar for a 3.60 Daily Double after requiring 1:15 5 for the six furlongs.
