J., May 14. — The announcement that Cain Hoy Stables Nile Lily would accept the challenge and that John S. Kroeses Marullah would probably follow suit, has given impetus and added color to Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 added Betsy Ross Stakes, a six-furlongs fixture exclusively for three-year-old fillies. Nile Lily, a daughter of Roman, won her debut by eight lengths, and came right back to win by four. In the Ashland at Keeneland the fleet filly finished third behind her stablemate, Jota Jota. The two were unplaced in the recent Kentucky Oaks. Nile Lily was acquired for 6,000 at the yearling sales and did not race at two. Jockey Pete Anderson will check in to pilot the Cain Hoy filly. Marullah Scored in 57 Bow Marullah made her 1957 debut at Jamaica last Wednesday and won at six furlongs with reserve power. Last season the daughter of Nasrullah won the Sorority . Stakes and ran second in the Fashion, Colleen and Astoria. Kroese. president of the Gaffney-Kroese Electric Supply Company in New York, purchased 12 yearlings at the Woodward sale, and kept two. Meanwhile, speed trials continue to dominate the local scene. Three of the most recent morning drills have been turned in by William G. Helis Jr.s Light *n Lovely, Brookfield Farms I Offbeat and Darby Dan Farms Evening Time. I Offbeat, a local winner and victress of the Prioress, breezed the three-quarters in l:153s. Harold H. Polks Mile. Dianne turned in an impressive winning effort here last week skipping the conventional six furlongs in l:ll2/5 and reporting a full length in advance of her nearest rival, Mares Beau. The latter, owned by Fred P. Maegher, has been the essence of consistency this season, finishing in the money in all five engagements. Her record shows two victories, a like number of second awards and one show paycheck. Others likely to start in the Betsy Ross are Bernadotte Farms Kapichan, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Double Royal, Lawrence W. Jennings Granny Annie, C. Mahlon Klines Last Slam, Mrs. Joseph T. Murtaghs Hearts Desire and A. F. Walls La Verite.
