Balanced Program Maintained Ratio of purses and overnights is a tenuous topic, and there is no rule of thumb which is right for all tracks, circumstances making the difference, but Hollywood, by all rights, could run a stake a day if you figure 2,000 and up purse is worthy of stake status, but to do so would upset the balance between stakes and overnights, so this Inglewood course cards as its daily features rich overnights that mostly attract stakes horses, and everybody is happy except the breeders, who lost what we considered a valid right to stakes-winning credentials in these races. ... In the overnight classification, leaving all stakes out of consideration, last summer Hollywood carded 20 per cent of its races for a purse of ,500 ranging to 2,000, with 33 races of either 0,000 or 2,000, a sum which at most tracks commands stakes status. . . . Jim Stewart, executive vice-president of Hollywood Park, expressed surprise that our Dublin correspondent, Michael OHehir, should report at length that Hollywoods venture advertising in Dublin, in effect a waste of money, for nobody would come from there to race at Hollywood at this time of year. . . . "Actually, we didnt expect any such response," smiled Stewart, "but our paid ad did apparently start the Irish to talking about Hollywood Park, and judging " from OHehirs column, the very audacity of it stirred up a lot of interest. Which was all we were looking for in the first place, and at least, a lot of people in Ireland now know there is such a place as Hollywood Park." Invitation to Air Tourist Speaking of advertising, Hollywood Park at long last has taken advantage of the steady stream of air traffic intq Los Angeles International Airport, the normal landing pattern of which takes planes down Century Boulevard, and has painted, in 40-foot high letters, the words "Hollywood Park" on its south parking lot. ... The price on Iron Maiden was figured at 0,000. Her foal that I obtained, Iron Monacle, broke a bone at two and never got to the races, but Amphibians foal turned out to be Nurse of War, who not only was a good winner herself, but produced me Pie Master, a stakes three-year-old, and Royal Nurse, whom I sold at Del Mar as a yearling for 1,000 and who was fourth to colts in the 0,000 Bay Meadows Futurity. Im more than happy with the deal, and congratulate Calumet for having purchased her and winning a Kentucky Derby with her offspring." . . .
