« I Top Spring Never Headed in Feature Boulmetis Registers Third Saddle Success of Day on William Helis, Jr.s Colt BY WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 28.— William G. Helis, Jr.s, Top Spring stepped out to a commanding lead at the beginning of the National Marbles Tournament fifth race here today, and carried jockey Samuel Boulmetis for a "rocking chair" ride for his third triumph on the program. The winning colt, a three-year-old son of Olympic Zenith and Early Spring, was going easily at the finish with an advantage of four and one-half lengths over Cary B. Boshamers King Bud. The latter, a slight favorite, raced in closest attendance to the winner throughout and held an advantage of better than two lengths over A. Bentons Dollargofast, the third horse. Incidentally, the six sophomores in the feature arrived at the finish exactly in their post position order. Top Spring was a close second choice and returned .20. It was the second consecutive winner for Boulmetis, and also was the second consecutive "gray" to enter the winners circle. He was timed in 1:12 for the six furlongs over a track that was 1 termed good. Visibility Poor A small crowd of 8,860 turned out under "muggy" weather conditions. The skies became I very murky and visibility was poor early during the program and a brief ■ shower fell during and after the first race. The cloud lifted slightly by the fifth race, but there was no relief from the pressing humidity. Savoy Stables Alexis, a stakes winner In his palmier days, strutted some of his old stuff in the third race and soundly [ trounced his field while winning by four lengths. It was very close at the finish for the other placements, with the camera awarding the place by a nose to Pelican 1 Stables Carmagnole the show to Jerry 7 McCarthy Stables Local Band and the ; favorite, S. Moores Titans Match, another r snout behind and fourth. Chris Rogers was riding in his usual alert t fashion and had the nine-year-old Alexis away from the gate with the leaders. • Rogers steadied him in the run down the 5 backstretch, and then came around with a 1 rush on the stretch bend to take over from 1 Titans Match and Carmagnole, and was s not threatened. The winning gelded son of Heliopolis — Misleading was making the - second start of his current campaign and ■ he paid a generous .80.
