Santa Anita, HBPA Agree On Purses for Three Years LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 25. An agreement has been reached between Los Angeles Turf Club, Inc., and the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association covering purse distribution for the next three seasons of racing at Santa Anita Park and perhaps for a period of five year, it was announced today by Dr. Charles H. Strub, executive vice-president of Santa Anita Park, The agreement was reached yesterday, Dr. Strub said, at a meeting in which he conferred with Elmer Smith, chairman of the purse committee; George Ring, president of the California division of the HBPA, and Charles Leavitt, committee member. The agreement guarantees purses equal to 40 per cent of the pari-mutuel handle, including breakage. It will extend definitely for a three-year-period, and the committee is urging approval by the national association that it cover a five-year span. Present by-laws of the HBPA limit such agreements to, a period of three years unless special approval is secured. Dr. Strub reported that his meeting with the purse committee was most pleasant and business-like.
