HEELFLY IN A CANTER Easily Defeats Three Other Eligibfes To Latonia Derby. Three Ds Star Held at Prohibitive Odds Dellor and Paris Prince-Garner Minor Awards. LATONIA, Ky., June 8 Striding in rhythmic perfection and with utmost ease, the Three Ds Stock Farms Heelfly galloped three other eligibles for the 5,000 added Latonia Derby into submission this afternoon in the Preparation Purse, mile and a sixteenth test which headlined the program. Though Heelflys margin, of victory over Dellor was only one length, it was the manner in which the son of Royal Ford Canfli accomplished the victory that was most impressive. Tom B. Youngs Paris Prince finished third, while the F. L. B. Stables The Queen was fourth. Because of his victory in the Latonia In-agural, plus several impressive speed tests, Heelfly was installed a pronounced favorite in the small field, being an odds-on choice, and, performing in a manner that proved conclusively that the faith in his ability was not misplaced in the least. Insofar as Heelfly was concerned, it was nothing more than an additional prep for his mile and a quarter engagement on Saturday, and the ridiculous ease with which the Texas-owned three-year-old scored is certain to attract an abundance of support for him in the impending stake. Unlike in his previous start, Heelfly acted kindly enough at the starting gate to escape being taken to the outside for the break, and when the field was dispatched the red, white and blue silks of the Three Ds Stock Farm were first to show in front. CHALLENGE FUTILE. Jockey Arthur Craig did not appear to be in very much of a hurry with Heelfly displaying an attitude that he would set his own pace or come from behind. However, Dellor, which was close behind the pacemaker when the clubhouse turn was reached, was taken under stout restraint and reserved for a bid in the last quarter, which proved futile. Heelfly loped along in front as they went up the back stretch, and The Queen moved up to equal terms, with Dellor, and was under a drive to achieVe this position. Craig, cool and calculating, did not make a move on the Three Ds Derby hopeful, and did little more for the remainder of the journey, though Dellor was driving to the limit in his attempt to overhaul Heelfly. Strive as he might, under the vigorous hustling of Eddie Yager, Dellor, winner of the Kentucky Derby Trial, in which he conquered Reaping Reward, among others, could not get within more than a length of Continued on thirty-ninth page. HEELFLY NA CANTER Continued from first page. Heelfly, which shouldered 115 pounds, three less than will be his burden on Saturday. There was a large week-day gathering in attendance, and an excellent brand of racing resulted over a fast track. PLAYBACK BY NECK. David W. Butler, Hollywood cinema director, furnished the winner of the fourth race, a five furlongs affair for two-year-olds, in which Playback annexed the initial victory of her career by a neck in a driving finish with Jessie O. Polly Greenock came up from the rear to be third in the field of eight youngsters. The opener fell to Minster, which joined the ranks of the double winners at the meeting by scoring over Albert Beck by a head, with Ada W. third. Bay Boy, one of the horses grouped in the field, finished first in the second race, leading home Joy Sweep, another "fielder," with So Good in third place. Frank Gering saddled the winner of the third event in the three-year-old brown filly Jackemma, the daughter of Hi-Jack defeating Atina by the margin of a length, with third money going to Misinformation. Apprentice Bobby Hutton, former Cincinnati newsboy, scored the first victory of his career before, home town folk, when he piloted C. N. Finchs Gustavia to an easy triumph in the fifth number, over the mile and seventy yards distance.
