READY FOR SHEVLIN STAKES Strabo Demonstrates Preparedness For Saturdays Aqueduct Feature by Victory Over Other Eligibles. N NEW YORK, N. Y., June 8. Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Strabo- qualified for his engagement in the Shevlin Stakes at.Aqueduct today, when in a game finish, he was winner of the Purchase Purse, over the mile distance, the same route as the Shevlin. All six of those that went to the post are engaged in the Saturday prize, and as far as they are concerned the Pompey colt is the master. Maxwell Howards Fencing was the one to take second place and well back of him came H. W. Maxwells Moonton, which was making his first appearance under silks. Grand Play was fourth and the only other starters were Night Bud and Gurkha. As in all of his races, Strabo did his running when it counted most, coming with his winning rush in the final furlong under a powerful ride by Sonny" Workman. Fencing had carried the burden of the pace to put Grand Play away and it was only in the last sixteenth that he tired. The start was a good one and Fencing and Grand Play drew away from the others with Gurkha at their heels. Strabo was two lengths back and Workman permitted him to reach racing stride before he asked anything of him, content with his position. Moonton broke slowly and he was back of the son of Pompey- but well before Night Bud. NIGHT BUD DISAPPOINTS. Grand Play hurig right to Fencing until near the stretch turn, where the Chance Shot colt drew away slightly. Then, turning into the stretch Arcaro permitted Fencing to go a little wide with the result Grand Play was carried out. As the others went out Wright called on Night Bud and attempted to send him through on the inside, but even with the ground that was saved he was not good enough. Workman made his first move with Strabo1 and he quickly raced to a position close after Grand Play. - The Vanderbilt gelding was first to tire and as he. dropped back Strabo continued his challenge until he was alongside Fencing. The pair battled for a few strides, but Strabo . would not be denied and he raced past to be winner by a length and a half. Moonton gained ground right, at the end to run down the tired Grand Play and take third but he was two . lengths back of Fencing. While this race should do Moonton some good, it appeared that he was not up to a best effort and he does not seem to be a i serious threat for the Shevlin. Strabo surely belongs and Earl Sande has Sceneshifter to fall back oh if Fencing is not good enough to come back Saturday.
