HIGH HEDGES SPEED DISPLAY Spreadeagles Opponents in Hampden Purse Over Slow Footing at Agawam Park Course. AGAWAM, Mass., June 8. Displaying fine speed over a track that was seconds slower than normal, High Hedge, fleet four-year-old son of Tall Timber and Moncito, made a show of some of the best sprinters on the grounds when he accounted for the Hampden Purse, an allowance race that served as the principal attraction at Agawam Park today. Opposed by five seasoned speedsters and enjoying mild support in the speculation, the colorbearer of the H. L. Bowers Stable made the track appear better than rated when he spreadeagled his opponents to surge to a five-length score as he clipped .off the distance in 1:06, the fastest time recorded for the abbreviated journey since the meeting was ushered in over a week ago. It marked the first success of jockey R. Martin, who recently returned to the saddle. High Hedge had two previous triumphs before his achievement in the Hampden Purse and was accorded good support although overshadowed in the betting by Upside Down, and it was at the direct expense of the A. C. Bostwick gelding that he rounded out his easy victory. Taking the lead at the ring of the bell and displaying a brilliant brand of speed, High Hedge led by a five-length margin in the early stages and the same distance prevailed as he crossed the winning line Upside Down, in third place during the early running but the chief opponent in the late stages, could do no better than land the place honors as Unheralded passed the three other starters to hold a big advantage for third. Despite rain, cloudy skies and a brief spell of sunshine a large and encouraging assemblage turned out. for an interesting day of entertainment that marked the ninth day of the local meeting. Outsiders were in the spotlight during the course of the matinee as favorites were bowled over.
