Her and There on the Turf Latonia Derby Field to Have Class. Reaping Reward Qualifies. Snark Returns to Top Form. Princess Pat Valuable Event. . A large field may not be forthcoming In Saturdays renewal of the Latonia Derby, to which 5,000 is added, but a keen contest is expected nevertheless as the lineup will possess more class than the event has attracted during its past few runnings. Most prominent among the starters will be the colts which finished third behind War Admiral and Pompoon in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Reaping Reward invading k, Latonia from Chicago and Flying Scot go-F ing there from New York. Among the prob-s-able opponents of these colts in the mile and one-quarter race, which long has been one of the outstanding stakes on the American racing calendar, are Over The Top, Heelfly and Sunset Trail II., all of which have shown becoming form of late. Over The Top had taste of War Admiral in the Preakness and the other two horses in the Kentucky Derby. Reaping Reward qualified for Saturdays race in winning a mile affair at Washington Park Monday and working out an additional quarter to cover the full route in 2:05. This performance suggests the readiness of the son of Sickle and Dust Whirl, by Sweep, even though he was making his first start since the Kentucky Derby nearly a month ago. Coming from well back with a rush through the final quarter to win his recent race by a length in the time of 1:37, the Milky Way Farm colt was eased up by Alfred Robertson when he remembered his instructions to work out Reaping Reward. The colt quickly returned to his best stride to finish out the trial in a manner that must have been pleasing to trainer Robert McGarvey. The vacation enjoyed by Reaping Reward after the Derby certainly may be expected to have done him more good than harm. ; Flying Scot finished two lengths nearer A War Admiral in the Preakness than Reaping Reward did in the Derby but the latter colt is almost certain to be the favorite because of his victory Monday as John Hay Whitneys colt displayed a disappointing performance in the Belmont. However, the son of The Porter and Caledonia, which accounted for the Withers after the Derby, should go better in the Latonia Derby because he may have the pacemaking task all to himself and it will be to his advantage. No three-year-old going a mile and a quar- ter has been able to take the track s I War Admiral although several of the sprint- ers of the same age, such as Rebellion, may be able- to do so. With War Admiral an absentee, a difference may be expected in the manner In which some of- his leading contemporaries perform. , i , Snark was on his very best behavior Continued on thirty-ninth . Although last of the field to leave the post and requiring a sixteenth of a mile to settle into his stride, the notionate son of Boojum and. Helvetia had all his speed when he settled down to his task because he went around the entire field before the turn out of the back stretch was reached to lead as he pleased thereafter. His time for the distance was 1:37 and his impost of 116 pounds was only one pound less than carried by Memory Book, which outgamed the others in the race to gain second honors. If James .Fitzsimmons is successful in having the Wheatley Stable colt as good for the Brooklyn as he was in the Queens, the Boojum four-year-old will be a tough one to beat, even though the distance is a furlong longer. The Latonia Derby is the most important race to be decided this week-end but it may be exceeded in value -by the Princess Pat Stakes, which will have its first running at Washington Park. This sprint of six furlongs is endowed with ,500, but having a future closing its value will move up considerably. On Aquedubts program is a pair of events, the Shevlin at a mile for three-year-olds and the Tremont at five furlongs for two-year-olds. In the Shevlin will be some of the secondary three-year-olds, while the Tremont possibly may bring out The Chief, impressive winner of the National Stallion Stakes. Suffolk Downs also is offering a double stakes program with the Bos-tonian and Plymouth Rock Handicaps, the former being forfillies arid mares at a mile and one-sixteenth and the latter for sprinters. Detroits headlirier is the Pontchartrain Handicap, a middle distance affair with ,000 added money which should draw the best horses at that track.
