ROUGH RIDING PREVAILS Riders in Cadillac Purse at Detroit Use Rodeo Tactics. Chalphone Driving Winner With Eddie H. Second and Sweepalot Third Annie L. Winner. V DETROIT, Mich., June 8. Rough riding, which has prevailed in the past several days, was again prevalent in the running of the Cadillac Purse, feature race offered at Detroit this afternoon as a preparation for Saturdays renewal of the Pontchartrain Stakes. Mrs. H. Dattners Chalphone was a driving winner, but L. C. Youngs Eddie H., and Dixianas Sweepalot, which finished second and third, respectively, would have reversed the finish had their riders stuck to their knitting instead of handling their charges xin rodeo fashion. Black Sleeves was fourth in the field of six to complete the mile and seventy yards, with Good Catch, a stablemate of Sweepalot, and Jelly Roll, reaching the judges in the order named. Stevenson rushed Sweepalot into a good lead during the run to the back stretch, with Good Catch on the inside in second place. Eddie H. was showing the way to Black Sleeve, with the winner leading Jelly Roll, a distant trailer. Near the far turn Calvert drove Eddie H. up on the outside of the leaders and when he attempted to drive past Sweepalot, Stevenson permitted his charge to swing wide, and he had the latter well out in the track as they swung into the stretch. This enabled Chalphone to drive through on the inside and while Calvert and Stevenson were battling, the winner steadily reached the lead to be drawing away at the end. PAYS GOOD ODDS. Chalphone carried 102 pounds, the same as Eddie H., and raced the distance in 1:45. All of the sextet are eligible for the Pontchartrain. Chalphone returned 4.80 for each straight. Threatening weather and a light shower in the downtown section at a time when most patrons would be leaving for the track, kept the attendance down to a minimum. A drizzle shortly before the running of the first race had no effect on the track and it was classified as fast. Favorites experienced difficulty in reaching the finish line before their opponents, but those held next in Continued on thirty-ninth page. ROUGH RIDING PREVAILS Continued from first page. esteem had a better afternoon and as a whole the sport was formful. Supporting the feature was the Saginaw Purse, which attracted a small field of five at six furlongs and this resulted in a thrilling contest, but another disappointment when Bomar Stables Biscayne Blue triumphed over Carl S., Kermay, Highomar, a seven vtb five hazard, and Lady Sara. WINNING COMBINATION. Mere Frolic and Lee Hardy provided the winning combination in the opening event, for plater juveniles. Oddesa Flag was second, a Tiead before Pull Cord. Polly Hastings made it two in a row and chalked up another victory for Charles T. Fishers Dixiana when she was an easy and popular winner of the three-quarters third race. Aftermath was second, a length before WillJDo. Marching Man, Missouri-bred four-year-old Color Sergeant gelding, scored for the field players when he turned back Jules Lazard, Rolodo and nine other older maidens, including The Mayor,-a 2 to 1 choice, at the end of six furlongs in -the second race. Royal Command provided another disappointment when he finished third to Mrs. R. LaMortes Anne L. and Forewarned in the fourth race, which was marred by considerable rough riding. The first dead heat of the spring meeting came with the nine-furlong seventh race, which went to Blackmail, with Joan Macaw second, when Miss Fetrina and Strolling Home were so closely locked in third place that the camera failed to separate them. vuiifi KtniMi
