Tiger Wins Washington Park Futurity Prize of 6,135 H. P. Headley Pair Finishes Second and Third Six Straight Public Choices Make Good at Homewood Meeting on Final Day. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 26. Tiger, performing under the silks of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farm stable, staked his claim to the two-year-old championship of the West and as an outstanding contender for national honors among horses of his age when he ran away with the first Washington Park Futurity, which featured a program marking the close of the thirty-day meeting at Washington Park today. The son of Bull Dog and Starless Moment was never headed as he ran the six furlongs over a lightning fast track in the sensational time of 1:11 to earn 6,135 of the 7,730 gross purse, 5,000 of which was added by the Washington Park Jockey Club. The crowd had expected a real battle for the small fortune which awaited the winner, but Tiger took the lead at the outset and was never seriously threatened. He won by two lengths, with Hal Price Headleys Me-now finishing second and Bourbon King, also owned by the Kentucky turfman, third, a similar distance back. Fourth in the field of eight juvenile colts which started was the Woolford Farms Joe Schenck, and then followed in order Calumet Farms Pharacase, Mountain Ridge, running companion of the winner, Valdina Farms Lassator and finally the Millsdale Stables Garry, the only one in ithe field which never before had faced the barrier. YEARLING BARGAIN Tiger, which was purchased as a yearling for the comparatively small sum of ,500 and which has won two of his three previous starts, broke out of the gate like an arrow under Alfred Robertson and before going a quarter had opened up a lead of a length an a half over Menow, which raced in closest pursuit of the Bull Dog colt throughout. Tiger maintained this advantage over the Headley performer to the final furlong, and then he increased his margin another half le.ngth for an emphatic victory. Tiger might have come up to this engagement unbeaten but for the fact that he ran to the ouside fence on the occasion of his second start. Bourbon King might have improved on his showing but for being blocked before going a quarter. His rider skirted the inside with him on the turn and then brought him Continued on forty-second page. Lassator tired after showing some early speed, while the others did not figure strongly in the running of the Tiger and his running mate ruled a slight favorite in the betting over the Headley entry. VALUABLE PHIZES Second money was worth ,000, with ,500 going to the tlird and ,500 to the fourth. Breeders of the first three also figured in the division of the purse, the Coldstream Stud receiving ,500 for having bred Tiger. Headley bred both. Menow and Bourbon King and received 50 and 50 in addition for their efforts. Tigers triumph gave the Wilky Way Farm its third important juvenile stakes victory of the year, Sky Larking having ; won the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs and Well Rewarded having taken the Princess Pat Stakes, another feature instituted at Washington Park this year. The crowd was one of the largest Saturday turnouts of the meeting, 15,000 persons having been estimated to have come through the grates. Cloudy for the early races, the skies cleared about the time the fifth race was called postward and the afternoon turned out to be one of the most pleasant of the season. THRILLING FINISHES. . The feature excepted, all of the races, were, given over to cheaper performers, but they provided a number of thrilling finishes and; a majority of., them resulted in popular victories. The Four Roses Purse, at a mile and seventy yards, offered as the fifth event, served as the principal supporting event and in it Mrs. Sam Orrs Metaurus achieved a popular triumph under the guidance of Alfred Robertson. The Orr veteian won by a length and a half, but more stirring was the battle for the lesser portions of the purse as Unkie Tom, Sleepy Joe, Carl B. and Flag Cadet raced under the wire in close order and in that sequence. Metaurus, second in his only two previous starts at this meeting, was well in hand and not far off the pace for five-eighths and then he began to move around the leaders. He forged his way to the front on the stretch turn and once in front continued on well to earn the big end of the purse. Mrs. Ernie McCowns Bohemian Lass, which is trained by her husband and was ridden by their son, Darrell, became the fourth straight public choice to win. The Polymelian filly, scoring her first victory in sixteen starts this year, got up in the last stride at the end of the seven furlongs to win the fourth race by a nose as Discourse, which had charged through on the inside approaching the furlong post and had taken a slight lead, finished second.. Our David was next to complete the sprint, with Firm Hand fourth.
