SEABISCUITS BROOKLYN - Howard Star Outstays Aneroid in Thrilling Stretch Duel. Great Renewal of Old Fixture Regal Lily Wins Gazelle, and Maetall Great American Stakes. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 26 In all the fifty renewals of the famous old Brooklyn Handicap, there never was such a spectacular finish for the prize as that staged at Aqueduct today, when C. S. Howards Sea-biscuit, and John A. Manf usos Aneroid raced past the line so closely lapped the spectators believed it could be nothing but a dead heat. The camera revealed, however, that the nose of Seabiscuit had reached the line first. Well back of the battling pair Memory Book, from the Greentree Stable, saved third from Maeriel. Seldom has such an exhibition of thoroughbred gameness been displayed here, when all through the long stretch Seabiscuit and Aneroid raced along side by side with neither giving an inch and running straight and true. Seabiscuit had set the pace throughout, making his triumph that much more impressive. By the victory the son of Hard Tack, who was making his first appearance under silks since las4 May, added 8,025 to his earnings. The last Saturday of the Queens County Jockey Club meeting attracted an immense throng and it was the greatest day of racing staged during the meeting. TRIPLE FEATURES. Before that never-to-be-forgotten duel in the Brooklyn, Walter M. Jeffords Regal Lily had won the Gazelle, -and the Great American had fallen to De Witt Pages Maetall, while the steeplechase feature was taken by Jungle King from the Greentree Stable. There was little delay at the post in the Brooklyn and the nine engaged left in good alignment though Gold Seeker was slow to get under way. Aneroid was actually first from the stalls, but Pollard soon had Sea-biscuit showing the way and he was destined to lead at all stages of the race. Bulwark, the lightweight of the party, went after the son of Hard Tack, but Pollard had a nice Continued on thirty-ninth page. 1 t v u s j- F j i t 1 t J j i r j j J i j j J i : i 1 1 1 1 ! 1 ; : : ; ; ; ; . Aneroid was some two lengths back of the leading pair and then came Rosemont, , and he was racing well in hand as he held his position. Memory Book had dropped back until he was only showing the way to Gold Seeker. FAST PACE SET. Bulwark hung close to Seabiscuit until the stretch was reached, but he was doing his best and Pollard had a nice hold of his mount as he went to the six-furlong mark in 1:11. Then after turning into the stretch Aneroid moved up to displace Bulwark and Rust, for an instant, came into a contending position. Rosemont, after one threatening move leaving the backstretch, was dropping back, but on the outside Memory Book, j j though still far back, was improving his position steadily. Before the furlong post was reached it had narrowed to a two-horse race. Aneroid was alongside Seabiscuit and he had moved up in a fashion, that made him look the winner. It did not seem possible that Sea-biscuit .could carry on after the use that had been made of hfs speed, but Pollard j roused the son of Hard Tack and never faltering, he held his slight advantage. Ane- roid was answering the call, of Rosengarten magnificently, but Seabiscuit would not be denied, and thus it was that the two crossed i the line locked in the greatest finish ever , seen in a Brooklyn. BIG SURPRISE. The defeat of the Wheatley Stables Drawbridge in the mile and a sixteenth of the Gazelle Stakes was the big surprise of the day. When she seemed to have the race at her mercy inside the final furlong, Regal Lily swept by her to win with ridiculous ease. The daughter of Sir Gallahad IH. saved second place, but her race was a truly disappointing one and below her true form. Third went to Wm. Dupont, Jr.s, Rosenna, and fourth went to Maecloud when she led home the J. H. Whitney pair of Peggy Porter and Royal Raiment. This renewal of the old filly prize carried a net value of ,125 to the winner. When Maetall carried the silks of De Witt Pages Maemere Stable to victory in the Great American Stakes he added ,750 to his earnings and he also took a higher place among the juveniles. Eddie Arcaro shared not a little in the score by his smart handling of the son of Tall Timber when he saved considerable ground rounding into the stretch. BY TWO LENGTHS. Ridden out, he was winner by two lengths over Robert L. Gerrys Perpetuate, winner of the Tremont in his last effort, and at the heels of the Gerry colt. C. V. Whitneys Dauber closed a big gap to take third by a length from Wise Counsel. Back of these followed Maepop, a stablemate of the winner, Catalysis and Indian Lodge, in the order named. First of the three specials of the big day was the Old Glory Steeplechase Handicap, and it was the first time at the meeting that the chasers were asked to race two miles and a half. This brought a great contest and victory for the Greentree silks when Jungle King led home G. H. Bostwicks Masked Knight and Mrs. M. MacNeilles St. Francis in 4:54, establishing a new record for the course. There was one fall when Thomas Hitch-, cocks French four-year-old Annibal, which was appearing under silks for the first time, went down at the last fence with Scott, who fortunately escaped with minor injuries.
