-I - - .- ; t Digest of Saratoga Yearling Sales - Not since the halcyon days of pre-depression times have the Saratoga sales been so consistently referred to as a barometer of racing and breeding prosperity as they have been since the Spa vendues closed last August While they are abviously a true index of the sports prosperity and trend, it remains a fact they are indisputable proof of the rise and fall of stallion dynasties, and that is the reason this paper prepared the following digest, showing at a glance the essential details, in summary form, of the fortunes of every sire who was represented by a colt or filly, or both, at the yearing sales of 1936. This tabulation comes at a time when buyers are making plans to again attend the sales of youngsters at Saratoga in August. It was hailed as a breeding triumph when at the close of the 1936 sales it was found that 467 yearling colts and fillies representing 109 sires had brought a total of ,162,425, for an average of ,489, the best return since 1931. Probably just as much satisfaction and a great deal more significance evolved from the fact that when the spotlight was turned exclusively on the fillies, it was discovered that 179 of the so-called weaker sex had sold for 33,225, for the splendid average of ,861, a sharp increase over the averages of recent years. Probably the biggest surprise of the year, however, was the popularity of the handsome gray stallion, Koyal Minstrel, son of Tetratema and worthy representative of the Roi Herode line in this country. Stiff competition for four head two colts and two fillies brought his average to the highly satisfactory figure of ,275, as compared to the ,007 enjoyed by the runner-up, Bull Dog. Thrd honors went to Sir Gallahad III. with an average ,885. With but two colts, Royal Minstrel led that division with an average of 4,150 as opposed to the 3,500 realized for one colt by Blue Larkspur. Sir Gallahad III five colts was third with ,460 and Man o War fourth seven colts with ,671. In the filly division the competition was keener, Bull Dog five and Royal Minstrel two I?in5 r lp honors at ,400 each. Sickle took third honors one filly at ,800 and Sir Gallahad III. earned fourth ranking eight at ,650. . Following is the all-inclusive summary of the 1936 sales: Top Aver- Aver- Aver- bire- 0. Head.
