DOWNS OPENSSATURDAY Stalls Bedded Down for Challedon ■9 and Porters Mite. Derby Contenders Expected to Arrive Today — Technician Works Mile in Brilliant Fashion. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 27— While stalls were being bedded down for Challedon and Porters Mite, two prominent Kentucky Derby candidates due here Friday from Maryland, and preparations were being completed for •the opening of the Churchill Downs meeting .Saturday, Technician, one of the Wests principal contenders for the 0,000 added race on May 6, was receiving another beneficial workout over the local course this morning. Technician, with which Herbert M. Woolf of Kansas City hopes to duplicate the 1938 Derby triumph of Lawrin, was sent a handy -mile around the main course in 1:42%, and he accomplished his task without the benefit of either running mates or blinkers. Trainer -Ben A. Jones described the trial as eminently satisfactory, explaining that he did not desire the colt to go any faster. In fact, he was .prepared to wave down the son of Insco if "he displayed a tendency to do anything but an easy mile. Two other possible Derby starters, Theo-"dore E. Muellers Timeful and Junius W. Bells Steel Heels, also performed on the prevailing fast track during the training hours. Timeful, traveling in company with Cherovan, went a handy three-quarters in 1:15%, and Steel Heels, working alone, ran five furlongs in 1:00%, also going handily. READY FOR REAL TRIAL. k Technician, which is one of the favorites for the Derby, is next to be seen in action under colors, for it is the intention of trainer Jones to start him in the six furlongs Daniel Boone Purse on Saturday, and, since the •race is exclusively for three-year-olds, several other Derby eligibles are likely to be among the contestants. The Insco colt also is an intended starter in the mile Derby Trial next Tuesday. In his trial this morning Technician went into action in front of the stand and under a snug hold most of the way went the first quarter in :25, the half mile in :51 and three-quarters in 1:17%, requiring only :25% for .the last two furlongs, to round out the mile in 1:42%. The colt was under a light hand :ride at the finish and came out of his spin in excellent fashion. In covering six furlongs in 1:15%, Timeful stepped off the first quarter in :25 and the half mile in :49%, while Steel Heels, called upon for greater speed, responded with a first quarter in :23% and a half mile in :47% before getting to the five furlongs marker .in 1:00%. Steel Heels performance was one of the fastest of the spring here. TRIPLE FUTURITY WINNER. . The arrival of Challedon, triple Futurity winner, owned by W. L. Brann", and Porters Mite, star three-year-old in the stable of William E. Boeing, will considerably strengthen the local Derby colony, which will be further enhanced by eligibles coming in from Lexington over the week-end. The remainder of the challengers now in the East are expected here early next week. While the doings of Derby horses are commanding widespread attention, fans hereabouts are eagerly awaiting the opening of the Churchill Downs spring session on Sat- Continued on thirty-second page. ] : DOWNS OPENS SATURDAY r Continued from first page. . urday. A splendid program is in the making j and if pleasant weather prevails the local I course may have one of its most brilliant Inaugurals in years. The opening program is topped by the ,500 aided Clark Handicap, a contest of a mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds and upward, and is supported by seven other attractive races, the principal one of which is the Daniel Boone Purse. The personnels of various departments at the Downs were operating full force today and no detail is being overlooked to make Saturdays opening a big one. Most of the racing officials are now on hand. The racing department under Charles F. Price was rushing along the work of accepting registrations, license applications and badge lists. More than one thousand horses were registered with racing secretary W. H. Shelley this morning and this total was being augmented hourly as stables came in from Lexington and other points. Louisville racing devotees are displaying high interest in the return of the sport and with visitors beginning to arrive for Derby week Churchill Downs can expect to get off to a flying start.
