LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 27.— When the canny Matt Brady transferred last years juvenile champion, El Chico, from Belmont Park to Jamaica and there gave the son of John P. Grier his final stiff workout for Saturdays renewal of the Wood Memorial Stakes, he employed a bit of strategy that undoubtedly improved El Chicos chances in his week-end engagement. In the workout El Chico traveled a mile and a furlong in l:52?s and galloped out the full Kentucky Derby distance of. a mile and quarter in 2:09. In taking the colt to Ja-, maica, Brady gave him opportunity to familiarize himself with the footing and the surroundings, something lilekly to benefit him a great deal. The trial was witnessed by the colts owner, William Ziegler, Jr., and he, like Brady, was well pleased with the performance. El Chico was paced by two stable companions, one accompanying him for a half mile and the other the remainder of the nine furlongs. The work tired El Chico more than Brady had expected, but the Wood and Derby horse cooled out faster than either of the two* horses that went with him shorter distances. Following the Wood Memorial, which will be decided over a distance of only one mile and seventy yards, El Chico will be prepared for the trip to Kentucky. Brady now plans to ship last years unbeaten juvenile king to Louisville on Monday and will send along several other of the Ziegler horses, possibly another of the stables Derby eligibles. The other classic nominees are Our Mat, Time Sheet and Substantial.
