STAR RUNNER FAILS BACKERS E Snow Defeats Odds-On Favorite in F Rego Purse at Jamaica. Large Crowd in Attendance Despite Threatening Weather— Trustworthy Wins for Talent in Opening Race. c ji * NEW YORK, N. Y. April 27,— Form horses, after having things very much their own way at Jamaica for a considerable period, suffered two sharp reverses here today when Star Runner, a one-to-three chance, bowed to Glen Riddles Snow in the feature, Rego Purse. Soigne, another odds-on choice, finished second in an earlier dash. f Snows victory was clean-cut for he over-came early trouble to register by a half-length a over the pacemaking choice, with Bogert five lengths back as he earned third money. Soigne met with interference in her race when she was defeated by the outsider Strut. c Despite the threatening weather another _ large crowd assembled at the grounds of „ the Metropolitan Jockey Club, with the c afternoons sport furnishing scant suste- j nance for followers of favorites. Star Runner, following his recent second to T. M. Dorsett in the Stuyvesant Haridi- cap, was looked upon as unbeatable in the main event with 2 to 5 being offered at post j time. The winner came in for only slight support at six to one. j WORKMAN ALERT. i Sonny Workman, who accepted mounts to- J day for the first time during the Metropoli- j tan season, had Star Runner away swiftly but had to let him run right along to com- | plete the initial half in :46%, to shake off 1 the persistent Bogert. He drew away slight- ly at the top of the stretch and appeared to have the situation in hand at the furlong pole, only to lack the resistance reserve needed to turn back the determined chal- J lenge of Snow. Snow, away forwardly from his rail sta- ■y tion, was in tight quarters on the inside for three-eighths of a mile. Wright finally found clear passage turning for home, bringing him. in between horses as he came around Star Runner. He engaged that colt at the furlong pole and outgamed him in the duel which followed. Bogert had plenty of early speed but tired badly in the stretch, . while Cross Question was done earlier. EARLY SETTLER SCORES. Early Settler, after accounting for his two : final races at Hialeah Park, started his Metropolitan campaign with a victory in the high-priced claimer, which was the afternoons secondary attraction. Bill Winfreys f ive-yeai-old son of Swift and Sure and Rose-omar, thereby gave "Sonny" Workman his ffrst winner of the New York season. As Early Settler completed the distance in 1:44.%, he was half a length in front of the gamely closing Unheralded, with Cisneros just a scant nose away. The latter ruled favorite for the event and was the fourth choice of the afternoon to be beaten. Early Settler was a 5 to 1 chance at post. Workman had his charge away rapidly and chopped him in behind the pace of Pastry for the first six furlongs. He brought the brown five-year-old around the leader turning for home to gain a short advantage and retain it to the end. The Washington rider was forced to use extreme pressure, first to turn back Cisneros and-then withstand Unheralded. WIDENER VICTORY. ; George D. Wideners Trustworthy was winner over the field of three-year-olds that met in the opening six furlongs dash fashioned under claiming conditions. B. F. Whitakers Red Time raced to the place and Paul B. Codds Egress saved third from Giboir. The Widener gelding was the choice of the race, going to the post at 4 to 5 and was ably ridden by Harry Richards. A surprise in the second, another six furlongs dash for platers, came when Nick Wall landed Paul Codds Strut, a 15 to 1 shot, winner over J. Shirley Rileys Soigne that went to the post at 1 to 2, and after these came A. Schwartz Fooled to beat Addis for third. Jim Fitzsimmons added another winner to his training record when Mess was winner of the third offering, a five furlongs dash for I maiden juvenile fillies under claiming conditions. The daughter of Hard Tack and Brown Princess came from behind to score over the Howe Stables Westing. Gaudy saved third from Fortunate Boop, favorite of the field.
