POPE ENTHRONED AT R0IV1AN BASILICA* OF ST. JOHN ROME, Italy, May 18. — Reviving a ceremony in abeyance for ninety years, owing to the rift, now healed, between the Vatican and the Italian government, Pope Pius XII. took possession of the basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome today. Riding in an open automobile, the pontiff beaded a ten-car procession from Vatican City to the basilica. Streets along the route were closed to ordinary traffic and part of the route was lined exclusively with members of the Italian Catholic Action organization. Italian and papal troops were drawn up at the steps of the bacilica, where the arch-priest presented a crucifix to the kneeling Pope. Then, robed in pontifical garments, His Holiness was handed the basilica keys. He participated in the time-honored feet-kissing ceremony and then was carried on a portable throne into the basilica for the ceremony of enthronement. Afterward, as Bishop of Rome, he pronounced a blessing from the central balcony. Thirty thousand Catholics, standing in the square of San Giovanni, beneath, received the blessing.
