HOSTILITY WINS ACORN Wheatley Miss Beats Stablemate, Wise Lady, at Belmont Park. Man o War Filly Earns 2,100 — Makes Slow Time for One Mile — C. V. Whitney Silks Score. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 18.— Hostility, well beaten in all her previous starts, gave the Wheatley Stable of Mrs. H. C. Phipps its second triumph in the Acorn Stakes, winning j the ninth renewal at Belmont Park this afternoon before a crowd of 12,000 persons. Staging a fine rush through the stretch under the piloting of Leon Haas, the daughter of Man o War and Marguerite de Valois scored by a length and a half over William Woodwards Belair Stud colorbearer Wise Lady, which was coupled with her in the wagering. The Falaise Stables Red Eye was nearly another length away and well before Ogden. Phipps Despondent, also coupled with the winning entry, saddled by James Fitz-simmons. In the first victory of her career, Hostility earned 2,100 of the ,500 added purse, as ,500 went to the second horse, 50 to the third horse and 25 to the fourth. Eleven three-year-old fillies went postward in the mile test, the time for which was comparatively slow at 1:39%. The track was fast, the weather clear and slightly cool. BACK KINDERGARTEN. Although the Wheatley-Belair-Phipps entry held quantative strength in the Acorn field, the talent disregarded its chances and centered [ its affections on Kindergarten, knocking her from 4% down to 2 to 1 as the odds on the trio soared from 4 to 8 to 1. Hostility was last to leave the post and still was outrun after the opening quarter but, leaving the back stretch, she passed several of her opponents, but her advance was retarded as she was compelled to race wide around the turn. However, the field bunched up as Red Eye and Early Morn took much out of themselves in bidding with each other for the pacemaking role. With the field straightened out for the run home, Early Morn dropped back. Wise Lady, which had been in the middle of the pack, then moved up to challenge for the lead. Haas had Hostility stepping along in her best stride by this time and the Wheatley miss rushed up to third position. Just when Wise Lady and Red Eye were having their argument coming to the final sixteenth the Man o War miss came up strongly on the outside and thereafter drew away steadily. Wise Lady then outgamed Red Eye. FOUND WANTING. Despondent, showing an even performance, held on for fourth position against the late efforts of Charlotte Girl and Otra. Kindergarten never was able to make trouble, although she had no excuse, being in an ideal position during the opening half mile, but she was found wanting in the late stages. I The first Wheatley victory in the Acorn j was attained by Iseult in 1933. Its duplica- | tion was achieved with Hostility shouldering 116 pounds as all the others except Grandi-flora, a maiden, carried the scale impost of 121 pounds. After having triumphed in all five of the steeplechases that had been offered at Belmont Park there came a change in the good | • fortune of Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable when Airly Beacon and Homburg, both under her colors, came to grief in todays cross-country race. This event went to L. E. Stoddard, Jr.s, Deserter, the longest-priced horse of the field, when he won at 25 : to 1 over Thomas Hitchcocks Constructor. The only other to complete the course was Canio, from the Groton Stable. Airly Beacon unseated Collins at the water jump, while Homburg went down at the seventh fence and Traffic Light unseated King at the sixth fence.
