SMALL METROPOLITAN FIELD Fighting Fox Appears Top Weight of Race With 118 Pounds. Jacola, He Did, Nedajr and Danger Point Likely Starters — Stake Had First Running in 1891. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 18.— Indications are a small but select field will go to the post for the Metropolitan Handicap, to be run on Saturday, May 20. It does not appear that more than eight will start, in which event the stake will have a gross value of 0,200 and net the winner §7,500. Fighting Fox appears to be the top weight of the field with 118 pounds. The Belair standard bearer has not been worse than second this year and won the Jamaica Handicap. He was second in the Excelsior and the Toboggan, proof positive he retains his best form. The good mare Jacola won her first start at Jamaica in good time and was third in the Dixie; the winner of the Selima Stakes, the Maryland and Washington Handicaps in other years appears to be right at herself. Her burden will be 115 pounds. He Did, also carrying 115 pounds, finished third in his first start, the Toboggan on the opening day of the meeting, and should improve off this effort NEDAYR READY. Nedayr, winner of the Pimlico Futurity and the Classic last year, probably will make his debut in this stake under 112 pounds. He may have a stable associate in Sun Alexandria, at 109 pounds, which performed creditably in his start on last Saturday, finishing second. Danger Point, winner of the Metropolitan a year ago, gets in with 105 pounds, and the manner in which he has been working gives rise to the suspicion he will be a starter and should acquit himself well. Lady Maryland, winner of the Carroll Stakes at Pimlico, will, if she starts, get in with 105 pounds. Another winner at Pimlico, Alfred G. Van-derbilts Heelfly, will endeavor to add to his reputation, his burden being but 112 pounds, and his races in Maryland indicate he is right at himself. The Metropolitan is rich in tradition; first run for in 1891, and won by Louis Stuarts Tristan, the bead roll of its winners include such high-class horses as Pessara, Ramapo, Voter, Bowling Brook, Filigrane, Ethelbert, Banastar, Gunfire, Irish Lad, Sysonby, Glori-fier, Jack Atkin, King James, Whisk Broom II., Stromboli, The Finn, Mad Hatter twice, Grey Lag, Sting, Sarazen, Black Maria, Nimba, Petee Wrack, Jack High, Questionnaire, Equipoise twice, Mr. Khayyam, King Saxon and Snark.
