i BILLIE DAY GRADUATES Equals Four and One-Half Furlongs Record at Fairmount Park. Apprentice Oren Stroud Astride First Winner on Billie Day — Laurel Wreath Wins Opening Race. COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 18.— Billie Day, from the stable of W. Day, accounted for the first victory of her career today. The juvenile filly, vhich had the services of apprentice Oren Stroud, defeated Mummer by a five lengths margin in the running of the fourth race this afternoon at Fairmount Park. Mummer in turn was a nose before Term-o-Jean at the end of the four and one-half furlongs dash, which was fashioned for maiden two-year-olds. The winner, with but one other racing effort to her credit previous to todays performance, displayed a high burst of speed shortly after the field was dispatched, and, setting a sizzling pace, the daughter of Rolls Royce— Billie Burke wrn as her rider pleased, running the distance in :54% to equal the track record established by Blind Star on June 16, 1934. IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE. The victory of the Day youngster was impressive from another point of view also, for in winning the event with the services of Oren Stroud it was a dual victory, a triumph for a maiden two-year-old and the first winning mount for Stroud. In piloting Billie Day to victory Stroud showed promise of riding ability. The lad, who is but 16 years old and who is contracted to C. H. Roberts, had the first mount of his career here when he was astride Chipeta in the second race on the sixth day of the current meeting. Laurel Wreath, owned by L. W. Can-U-Tell finished third, and Miss Lampley fourth in the field of seven. The thirteenth start of Quennas career proved a lucky omen for the three-year-old daughter of Quibbler — Shasta Lady. The L. Cassity colorbearer graduated from the maiden ranks in the eighth start of the current year, installed the favorite, Quenna scored in easy fashion over eleven other maidens when she reached the finish, two lengths in advance of Haps Pal. Mart finished third, a length farther back.
