1 SUFFOLK DOWNS NOTES f $ : s New England and visiting turf writers were saddened by the news of the passing on of John I. Day, for many years prominent as a turf writer and editor. Former editor of the Morning Telegraph, one time president and at his death secretary-treasurer of the New York Turf Writers Association, he was known to horsemen and turf followers throughout the country. Ben Bernie will visit Suffolk Downs next Wednesday to present a silver trophy to the jockey riding the winner of the Ritz Carlton featured race. Tom Thorpe, steward, opened a busy banquet season, which will keep him occupied several nights a: week, by being the guest speaker at a meeting of the Roxbury Y. M. H. A. last night. T. J. Healey, owner and trainer of Tatterdemalion and Black Look, arrived Thursday. Mose Merrill, now a full fledged jockey, checked in Thursday morning. He is under contract to W. H. Gallagher.
