COL. ALGER MEMORIAL Fourteen Handicap Stars Listed to Start in Detroits Holiday Feature. Bernard F., Bobs Boys, Sortie Star, Catomar, Drudgery and Other Tried and True Campaigners in Field. DETROIT, Mich., May 29.— Fourteen handicap stars which include three invaders, were entered for the ,000 added Col. Alger Memorial, to be renewed for the fifth time as the feature of the Memorial Day program at Detroit tomorrow. Bernard F., I. J. Collins sterling Ohio home-bred, will carry the actual top impost of 118 pounds, but Mrs. C. C. Winters Catomar, under 113 pounds, is equally weighted by the scale. Those to journey here for the one and one-sixteenth miles jaunt are Winston Guests Drudgery, M. J. Schmitts Sortie Star and Superior Farms Bobs Boys. Drudgery, under 116 pounds, and Bobs Boys, with an assignment of 115 pounds, follow Bernard F. in the line of weights and Drudgery finished second to Neighbor in the Inaugural Handicap at Cleveland on Saturday. Bobs Boys has had a busy campaign since starting in Florida. He arrived here Saturday night from Lincoln Fields, while Drudgery and Sortie Star were unloaded late yesterday after an uneventful trip from Cleveland. PLENTY OF OPPOSITION. In addition to Bernard F. and Catomar, the latter winner of her only start here, others to oppose the invading trio are Star Boarder, improved three-year-old in the Dixiana barn of Chas. T. Fisher; Imperial Sir, Show Up, All Lady, Your Buddy, Seed, Radio Gold, Gridiron and Dissembler. The latter pair are coupled as the Fred M. Alger and A. L. Copland entry. The race honors the memory of the father of Gridirons owner, and the three-year-old showed his fitness for the race when he worked out a mile last Friday in the good time of 1:42. Azucar, winner of the first running of the Santa Anita Handicap, made three attempts to annex the coveted prize, but the best he could do was finish second to Stand Pat in 1935; second to Whopper in 1937 and third to Polar Flight, which carried the Alger colors to victory in 1936. No member of tomorrows field has contested -previous runnings of the race and, excepting Gridiron, no owner has an opportunity of completing a double. All Lady and Seed are also named for the eighth race. ..In the event of fourteen starters the race will gross ,500, with the winners share ,100. Last years renewal was won by Main Man under the crushing impost of 126 pounds. GROSS ,500.
