BELAY AND JOCKEY ARCARO Hold Spotlight in Mondays Racing Program at Belmont Park. Qualifies for Saturdays Engagement In Belmont Stakes by Capturing the Africander Handicap. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 29.— Belay, a possible starter in the Belmont Stakes Saturday, indicated his readiness for that engagement by cleverly winning the Africander Handicap, the principal attraction at Belmont Park this afternoon. In capturing the mile and a quarter event over a trio of other three-year-olds, the son of Display and Scuttle captured a double for A. C. Bostwick, his owner, and Mrs. Elizabeth C. Bosley, one of the few women trainers. Belay also was the third winning mount for Eddie Arcaro. A fine Monday crowd was in attendance as warm weather prevailed. The victory of Belay was popularly received, as he was installed a slight favorite in the Africander, in which Belair Studs Challenge was second and Time Sheet, owned by William Ziegler, Jr., was third. War Moon completed the field. The Bostwick colt, second to Heather Broom in his previous outing, won by two J lengths as Challenge finished three lengths before Time Sheet. War Moon was far back. Time Sheet, another possible Belmont Stakes starter, was worked out an additional furlong, with his full time being 2:21. The race was run in the ordinary time of 2:06%. BELAY WILLING. 1 Belay showed a willingness to run in the early stages, but Arcaro took him under] strong restraint to permit Time Sheet to show the way. The Ziegler colt had an advantage of five lengths approaching the far turn, but Belay went to him steadily thereafter without being urged, being closely followed by Challenge. When Belay assumed command turning into the stretch and Challenge was at his heels, Arcaro shook him up for the first time and that was sufficient to hold Johnstowns stablemate at bay. Belay increased his margin in the final furlong and 1 Arcaro took him in hand a few strides out. j Challenge was kept under urging, while j Time Sheet was kept, going under a hand | ride to continue in his workout War Moon i trailed all the way. A. C. Bostwicks Cacodem was given very little opposition by his seven rivals in the Loantaka Purse, the secondary attraction, and after disposing of Marriage in the opening three furlongs the four-year-old son of Mad Hatter and Brown Elf drew out to win without being urged by P. Mills. His advantage at the conclusion of the six furlongs sprint was four lengths over the Howe Stables Time Passes.
