Ferd Prevails in Four-Horse Blanket Finish of Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Schuttinger Homebred Neck To Good of Navy Chief as More Sun Is Bang-Up Third BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., May 18. — Ferd, the homebred son of Lochinvar and Ouch, who races for Mrs. Andrew Schuttinger, of Queens Village, N. Y., was returned a driving winner of the Juvenile Stakes this afternoon. Ridden by Basil James, he displayed a high order of speed and gameness when he responded to extreme pressure in the final furlong to come again and eain the major award, 1,125. His margin at the finish was a neck over Navy Chief, racing for E. P. Taylor, while More Sun, from the Brookmeade Stable, was third. A scant head back Fox Time was fourth with Our Tops, Curtain Raiser, Wise Bull and Blue W. finishing in that order to round out the field. The Juvenile was the featured offering this afternoon and as the placed quartet surged to the finish wire the ultimate result was in doubt until the official placing was displayed. Ferd was on the outside of his company, while More Sun was along the rail and sandwiched between them were Navy Chief and Fox Time. Considerable interest was detracted from the running when Suleiman, from the Wal- ► ter M. Jeffords menage, was scratched. It was reported that this colt developed bucked shins following his trial yesterday for the test. Another withdrawal from the overnight field was Great Admiral, who was coupled with More Sun. Ferd was passed through the yearling sales at Saratoga Springs last summer and bought in by B. L. Squires, acting as agent, for ,200. Evidently a bargain was passed up at the time for the colt has amassed in three winning efforts the imposing total of 4,900. Schuttinger recently, acting for his wife, refused a flattering offer for the youngster. Mrs. Schuttinger made her first appearance of the meeting to witness Ferd in his Juvenile victory. She suffered severe burns several weeks back and is convalescing steadily. The octet left the starting stalls in good alignment, with Ferd, breaking from an outer post position, showing the way. He was pressed by Curtain Time, with Blue W., Navy Chief and More Sun in close pursuit, while Fox Time and Wise Bull brought up the rear. These positions were maintained for the first quarter mile. But when nearing the three-furlong marker, where the main track bisects the Widener Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Ferd Wins Belmonts Juvenile In Four-Horse Blanket Finish Continued from Page One Course, Curtain Raiser bumped Ferd. The latter bobbled slightly, but quickly regained his stride. At this stage, Blue W. dropped- back and Ferd, Curtain Raiser, Navy Chief, More Sun and Fox Time were staging a spirited battle spread fanwise across the strip. In the final furlong, Fox Time was in close quarters, as Navy Chief moved over and Curtain Raiser, beginning to tire, drifted in. Through the final furlong, the leaders were under pressure, and grandstand placing judges were undecided as to who was returned the winner. Ferd sped down the Widener course in :57%, a slower effort than the track standard set by Distraction some 20 odd years back when that youngster raced or the Wheatley Stable. His time of :56 has not been threatened of late years. Ferd carried 122 pounds, as did Wise Bull, and he conceded from five to nine pounds to his opposition. Ferd is not eligible for the National Stallion Stakes, another of Belmonts standout juvenile offerings, and trainer Schuttinger was in doubt .as to his next start. Belmont Park this af ternon acted as host to 21,659, and clear skies and a fast track prevailed. Racing was spirited and, despite the failure of several of the .choices, the sport was of an interesting nature.
