PnncandRoygl Turris Back Favored Swallow Tail . LIVERPOOL, England, May Reuters . — Lord Derbys three - year - old colt, Swallow Tail, second favorite for the Epsom Derby, provided the biggest surprise of the current season when he was beaten in a four-horse race for the Knowsley Dinner Stakes, run over 10 furlongs here today. Swallow Tail, having his last outing before the famous classic, started at 2 to 9, and was beaten three-quarters of a length by the 33 to 1 outsider, Prince Royal. The Gaekwar of Barodas Ma-karpura was third. No excuses were offered for Swallow Tails failure. The pace for the first five furlongs was slow but his jockey, Doug Smith,* did not connect this with his mounts failure. Prince Royal made the early running and gave way momentarily in the stretch but came on again to win impressively. Captain Elsey, trainer of Prince Royal, said, "I certainly never thought my colt was that good and I even took him out of all the classics. In fact, I am quite as mystified as everyone else."
