Egretta Returns to Turf Wars at Suffolk Course McCarthy Stake Winner to Meet Gray Star, Dukes Gal, Kandy Cal SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 18. — Seven of the better members of the weaker sex are scheduled to match strides in tomorrows best offering at Suffolk Downs. The feature, named the Chelsea, will be run at six furlongs and is for fillies and mares contesting for a purse of ,000. Jerry McCarthy Stables stakes-winning filly, Egretta, will be making her 1949 debut invthe Chelsea and despite her long winters rest, the sophomore daughter of Ra-millies — Polly Egret should attract the bulk of the mutuel play from the New England regulars who remember her trio of stakes victories as a juvenile. Trainer Melvin "Sunshine" Calvert has been patient in bringing Egretta up to her top form and her speed was attested this morning by a handy half mile spin in :48 over the deep racing strip. Last year the McCarthy miss annexed the Narragansett Nursery Stakes, Betsy Ross Stakes at Suffolk Downs, then was successful in the Jeanne DArc Stakes at Rhode Islands mile track. In addition to earning stakes money netting her owners 9,890, Egretta won ,000 in non-feature events totaling 5,890 for her initial year of racing. Darling and Simms Dukes Gal, M. T. Homes Kandy Cal, H. J. Carrs Gray Star, Mrs. B. F. Listers Evening Rose, T. W. Smiths Joes Gal and J. W. Nizleks Mayes Riley comprise a formidable obstacle for Egretta to hurdle to start the current season off with a triumph. Dukes Gal had won her last two starts, one at Gulfstream Park before transferring to Suffolk Downs, the last by virtue of a disqualification while finishing a neck behind Sandy Strand Stables Streak of Dawn after being impeded in the stretch run. The fleet daughter of Gallant Duke finished second to Egretta in last years Ganett Nursery and can be counted on for her usual "consistent performance. Gray Star is one of the older members of the group, being a six-year-old, but her speed is always a keen factor at tomorrows distance. In 10 starts between Sunshine Park and Lincoln Downs this season, the daughter of Gino has compiled a record of four victories, two seconds and one third. Already she has doubled her win record over that of 1948 and appears headed for one of her best years. Evening Rose and Mayes Riley have had one start over the local racing strip and should improve enough off that effort to be in the thick of contention in the Chelsea. Kandy Cal, although a four-year-old, has started four times in her career, winning a pair of races while finishing third once. Since arriving here from Florida, the Andy K — Ethical miss has been training smartly. She has been six furlongs in an easy 1:17% and wound up her training for tomorrows debut by traveling a handy five furlongs in 1:04. Joes Gal was extensively campaigned during the recent winter season in Florida but failed to earn a set of brackets. On occasions the Ned Reigh mare beat some good sprinters
