Charing Rock Successful In Cohasset at Suffolk Scores by Length and Quarter Over Fast-Closing Misleader SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 18. — F. M. Pqncelets consistent sprinter, Charing Rock, found the field in the Cohasset more to his liking this afternoon at Suffolk Downs and scored by a length and a quarter over the fast-closing Misleader from the Circle K Farm. A nose back of the runner-up, Mt. Desert Stables Tim B. took third honors in the six-furlong test. Installed favorite by the majority of the 12,688 patrons present, Charing Rock paid .40 for his initial victory of the 1949 season. Previously, the son of Charing- Cross Jiad been third in two local outings. Todays time of 1:12% was about average for sprinters of this caliber. The Cohasset lost one contender soon after the start, when Mrs. C. A. Copes Friedy broke down badly before reaching a quarter mile. It was the first start for the Bull Lea colt since last September at Nar-ragansett Park and todays incident will probably shelve the four-year-old for another long period. Friedy broke alertly to take a short lead as the field moved away from the barrier in the chute at the end of the backstretch, but Directoire took over before a furlong was traveled. The Gavegnano colt drew clear and was going well along the inside when he suddenly drifted out on the turn. Charing Rock, under jockey Eddie Zulker, was close up as Directoire raced wide and immediately took advantage to gain the lead. Zulker took no chances with the Ponce-let sprinter after gaining a two-length advantage and was swinging his whip the remaining distance to the end. Directoire continued to drift as he made the final turn and tired enough to drop out of the moneyed position. Misleader, who is regarded as better suited at a longer distance than todays test, was closing with a strong rush in the late stages, and had the race been much longer, the Snark stallion may have overtaken the winner. Ray Metcalfs Gracie Son, bred by the popular owner-trainer, won a close decision over Mrs. Sam Orrs U. S. Bound in the six-furlong fifth race that preceded the feature. Gracie Son, ridden by Gigi Moore closed with good energy to gain a nose decision over the front runner from Texas and chalked up the fastest time of 1:12% at the current meeting for the distance.
