Appleton Draws Twelve Fencers Elkridge, War Battle Duo Vies With Larky Day and Floating Isle at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 18. — Steeplechase enthusiasts come into their own again tomorrow with the twenty-eighth running of the Charles L. Appleton Steeplechase. The event, one of the prized offerings for that branch of racing, is over the two-mile course and carries an endowment of ,500. The offering is the fourth on the program of the usual eight races. Twelve were named for the test of which Elkridge and War Battle will race coupled as the Kent Miller entry while Navigate and Allier will be grouped as the Rigan McKinney and Mrs. C. Sullivan entry. The Appleton comprises 12 jumps and should all start, the gross value to the winner will be ,600. This race is the second stake offering for the steeplechase; the first at the meeting was the International Steeplechase Handicap. In the field named for tomorrow, the veteran Elkridge is the top weight with 150 pounds and the assignments scale down to 133 on Rapier. The conditions call for four-year-olds and upward and to the owner of the winner the Appleton Memorial Cup will be presented. This offering is the gift of the Greentree Stable. Won Pimlico Spring Maiden A study of the overnight entries points out the McKinney entry as the probable choice over Larky Day, a newcomer to the sport. The latter impressed with his effort in the Pimlico Spring Maiden offering and students of that branch of racing predict a promising future for this fellow who, while racing on the flat, had a high turn of speed. However, the majority of the starters are making their seasonal New York debut, while Lieut. .Well and Elkridge showed up well in their efforts here. Lieut. Well finished third to Homogenize and Fleettown in the International, while Elkridge, who finished fourth, had speed for the first mile and one-half. The main reliance of the McKinney-trained pair looms up in Allier. This fellow, well seasoned by a brace of efforts this spring, appears a capable prospect. His form last season was good and a return to any of those better races would make him a formidable factor. Point Bleu is a French importation. He was shipped over last summer to start in the first International Steeplechase. However, he fell at the first fence and in later races failed to race to expectations. Reports are to the effect that his schooling and training this season are much improved. War Battle is a steady going one when at his best and is gifted with speed. He could be a stout contender. The supporting races to the featured offering are the Rosetown Handicap, an overnight event for fillies and mares three years old and upward at six furlongs. Six were named for this with Alfoxie and Bull-anguera to race coupled as the Mrs. P. Ambrose Clark and John S. Phipps entry. Bullanguera is a South American importation that was given her training at Aiken, S. C. The Scintilator is the other offering and this is at seven furlongs for three-year-old colts and geldings. Fourteen will face the starter here in which Lord Path-mate and Ourquest are Withers hopefuls. i j ■ ! : , , : ; : . ; [ : , i ; , ; :
