Halt to Start in Withers Saturday Goes Six Furlongs In 1:13 at Belmont Will Face Olympia and Five Or Six Others in 5,000 Mile Test at Nassau Oval BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 18. — Halt will face the starter in the Withers for the Woodvale Farm, so stated trainer Woody Stephens this morning following a six-furlong trial by the colt. Halt was tested over the main track and he displayed a high turn of speed in the early stages although he was showing slight signs of tiring at the finish to be timed in 1:13. Halt, who made his last start under colors in the Derby and finished unplaced, was unaccompanied in his essay. Breaking a sixteenth of a mile from the starting pole he was in full stride as watches were snapped. He reeled over the first furlong in :11% and the quarter mile in :22%. The three furlongs were timed in :35 while the half-mile marker was passed in :47V£. He continued at this brisk pace to be timed for the five furlongs in :59%. The final time was 1:13 and he was then galloped out an additional furlong in :27%. Fog During Early Hours This move was one of the highlights of an otherwise slow morning. A dense fog had settled over the Nassau County plant during the night and did not lift until close to nine oclock. Action from then on was spirited but the majority of trainers limited their tests to the shorter distances. Similar conditions prevailed at Jamaica and Aqueduct and training schedules were disrupted at those points. The field for the Withers is gradually taking shape and racing secretary John B. Campbell expects seven or eight starters. Assured in the field is Fred W. Hoopers Olympia, who will be given his final sharpener for the event tomorrow. Halt was made a starter today by trainer Stephens while Noble Impulse, the pacemaker in the Preakness, is reported ready to be shipped here. Daiquari, from the menage of Mrs. Aksel Wichfeld and George D. Wideners Reveille, are potentials. The Greentree Stable has three representatives, Brick, One Hitter and Wine List, but trainer John Gaver has not as yet decided which one would start. He leans to One Hitter.
