Handicap de las Americas Will Be Renewed Sunday Mild Retort, Be Fearless and The Gike Probables for Stake MEXICO, D. F., May 18.— The decks are now cleared for Mexicos most important racing classic for older horses, the Handicap de las Americas, at a mile and a quarter, on Sunday, May 22, for a purse of 50,000 pesos added. The recent running of the Handicap Presidencial at a mile and a furlong, considered as a prep for the forthcoming head-liner, gave racegoers an opportunity to size up the contenders for the seventh Handicap de las Americas and many believe that a five-year-old son of Bold Venture has a good chance of winning this rich classic. In capturing the Handicap Presidencial, Mild Retort, chestnut horse by Bold Venture — Plain Talk, and a full brother to the filly, Re-Torta, recent winner of Mexicos "Triple Crown," trounced a number of the principal contenders for the Handicap de las Americas, the to include the Bradley-bred, Be Fearless, which finished second; the English-bred, The Gike, winner of the 1948 Derby Mexicano; Montanes, and others. Owned by Granja Santa Elene, racing name of Senator David Romero Castaneda, who claimed Mild Retort from Don Carlos Gomez, prominent Mexican industrialist, the good son of Bold Venture was making his eighth start for his new owner and it was his fifth consecutive victory, as he had previously won four other races in the allowance division. Therefore, local racegoers have a good reason to believe that Mild Retort has a good chance of taking the seasons most important gallop for older horses. Twenty-seven of the best handicap performers now in training at the local course have been nominated. At this time, there appears to be about a dozen starters, but the number will be more definite following the publishing of weights by racing secretary Arturo Milhe.
