Grand Barter Is Game Winner at Downs Oval Holds Length Margin on Zoom; Latter Unfortunate in Running CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 18.— Brown Hotel Stables Grand Barter, with apprentice Jerry West in the irons, carried the light blue and white colors of his owner, J. Graham Brown, to a game decision in the Lawrin Purse, one of the better offerings on the afternoons program. A prominent factor from the beginning, the Brown colorbearer came out for the stretch drive and, after bearing over on Niles and Schriebers Bonrilla, who, in turn, slightly impeded Joseph A. Goodwins Pnut Vendor, continued on gamely to reach the end of the six-furlongs a length to the good of T. W. and A. C. Fergusons Zoom, who probably would have been the winner if he had not encountered acute interference nearing the three-sixteenths marker. In third position, another half-length to the arrear of Zoom and three and one-half lengths before Bonrilla, came the Goodwin campaigner. Grand Barter, under his impost of 119 pounds, completed the assigned journey in 1:12 and paid .40. Bonrilla made the pace to the stretch under steady rating after the field was dispatched without undue delay. Grand Barter raced in closest pursuit of the pacemaker, with Pnut Vendor following throughout the first half mile by some two lengths. As the small field swung into the home lane, George South, astride Zoom, sent his mount through a gap which apparently was not there at the head of the stretch. Entering the final furlong, the tiring Bonrilla was forced to take up suddenly when Grand Barter lugged in, also causing Pnut Vendor, who" was on the inside, some difficulty. After disposing of Pnut Vendor and Bonrilla midway the drive, the winner continued on readily under pressure and drew clear. Zoom, who was forced to take the overland route following his misfortune, closed resolutely on the outside to earn the runner-up honors over Pnut Vendor.
