Free America, Armed Prep For Churchill Downs Handicap CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 18. — Calumet Farms Free America and Armed, two of the more formidable contenders for Saturdays renewal of the 0,000 added Churchill Downs Handicap, were on the track this morning for preparatory trials and impressed the local dockers with their impressive moves. On a track that was termed fast, but was somewhat dull due to a dense fog which prevailed in this sector, Free America breezed five furlongs in 1:00%, completing the first half mile of the assignment in :47%. Armed also was sent a similar distance in 1:01%, h while negotiating the half in :48%, but was under snug restraint throughout. Bewitch, another member of the extensive unit of owner Warren Wright and also a probable starter in the seven-furlong closing day feature, breezed a half mile in :50%. Joseph A. Goodwins Ky. Colonel, who was unplaced to the arrear of Calumets Ponder in this seasons seventy-fifth running of the Kentucky Derby, also took to the track and was breezed five-eighths in 1:02%. Ky. Colonel was not nominated for the Churchill Downs Handicap, but is a prominent contender for the numerous! three-year-old stakes, which will be presented during the extensive Chicago and Detroit meetings.
