Miss Tartan Gets Call at Churchill Veteran Mare Attempts to End Double Features Win Streak in Sprint Offering CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 19. — With the majority of the more formidable thoroughbreds awaiting Saturdays renewal of the 0,000 Churchill Downs Handicap and other allowance events, lesser lights of the local turf colony predominate tomorrows all-claiming program at .this south Louisville course. A total of 30 of the original list of 39 nominations for this, the twelfth running of the closing day fixture accepted weights for the seven furlongs, but according to officials, a field of 10 or less will in all probability parade postward. Calumet Farms powerful entry of Free America and Armed, both of whom are expected to start in the Churchill Handicap, will undoubtedly rule the post-time choices, and have been working cleverly for this engagement. In addition to the Warren Wright tandem, other contemplated starters include W. H. Veenemans Phar Mon, Brown Hotel Stables Tidy Sum, W. M. Peaveys Jett-Jett, L. J . Caillouettes Best Prospect, Mrs. H. J. Damms Reighs Comet and Mrs. F. P. Letelliers Knights Hill and Queen Hairan. Eight in Main Event The sixth race on tomorrows program, a six-furlong dash designed for intermediate claiming performers, is perhaps the best presentation on the card. In this test, eight better-than-average sprinters are slated to match strides in what appears to be a rather interesting contest. If past performances can be used as a criterion, J. L. and C. J. Allgeiers Miss Tartan should prove capable of turning back her opponents, who include Mrs. S. N. Staffords Double Feature, O. F. Woodwards Chippewa Chief, Grand Stables Big Wash, Mrs. F. P. Letelliers Knights Hill, H. D. Mag-gios Patmiboy, Kennedy and Wilkersons Big Ditch and Duke Pailets Castle Over. Miss Tartan has always been at her best over the local strip and since her last start here earlier in the meeting has been working well, which would seem to indicate a return to winning form. In her first outing this season at the Downs the Allgeier miss showed speed before finally giving way to Mrs. A. M. Creechs Thunder Hoof, E. R. Morris Duck Berry and Knights Hill, and should display improvement from that outing. Knights Hill has shown promise in each trip postward here and under his modest impost of 110 pounds could easily be returned the winner. Most consistent of the members of the field is Double Feature. This veteran sprinter has returned to the winners circle on two occasions here and also accounted for an equal number of triumphs at the recently terminated Oaklawn Park meeting. The balance of the group has performed creditably from time to time during the Blue Grass tenure with the exception of Big Wash and Chippewa Chief, who will be making their first starts of the 1949 season at this course.
