r tante at the JUDGES STAND ** CHARLES HATT0N LEXINGTON, Ky., May 19.— J. C. "Jim" Ellis, the impresario of Dade Park, is enjoying one of his more successful seasons as an owner and breeder. ,His Miss Neal won the Phoenix at the direct expense of no less a horse than is Free America, and more recently his two-year-old filly, Aunt Jayne Z., won the Debute TV io This is ir .r.nnj-l-tn.. another *- ~n,3iinf ~f of the r tante at the TV io This is ir .r.nnj-l-tn.. another *- ~n,3iinf ~f of the Downs. product Ellis stud. She is the entire 1947 crop of foals by the obscure Shakamak, a 10-year-old son of Axenstein, and she is out of a mare by Missionary, another whose name leaves pedigree experts cold. Nevertheless Aunt Jayne Z. ran in record time at Hot Springs, defeated Duchess Peg in the Debutante, and now must be considered one of the best products for two-year-Old frilly stakes at Detroit Fair Grounds and Lincoln-at-Washington. The first of the MRAs stakes for this age arid sex is the 0,000 Powder Puff on June 8, and it will be followed three days later by the 0,000 Miss America Stakes at the Lincoln meet. The dates are rather close, and some of the eligi-bles will choose to start where Aunt Jayne Z. does not. By the way, Ellis will open Dade Park on August 6 and this meet extends 26 days through September 5. It is described by Del Holeman as the "Little Saratoga of the West," and draws on Tennessee as well as the populous Evansville and Henderson area. AAA Stuyvesant Peabody and his fellow members of the new Illinois Racing Board were not long being initiated. The Leonard Wilson stimulation case came soon after the opening of the Chicago season, and now is under investigation. Peabody is perhaps the youngest commission leader at 37. His late father was president of Lincoln Fields and raced Flat Iron and other popular entertainers of several decades ago. Indeed the 5,000 Peabody Memorial, to be renewed by Lincoln-at-Washington • on Decoration Day, is named for him. By the way the boards steward, Bill Hamilton, now is advocating a rule which would require trainers to name the riders for their horses at the time entries are made. A change in jockeys would be prohibited without the stewards approval. This would preclude jocks agents from making several engagements in the same race.- AAA Detroits press box becomes a rooting section whenever George Krehbiels filly Golden Bolt goes to the races. Youd think it was Oaks day, and the boys had bet their shirts. As as matter of fact Golden Bolt is a pretty good sort, and a credit to her young sire Bolingbroke, a son of Equipoise, who now serves in Virginia for Mrs. Scott and Willie duPont. The Krehbiels bred her and reared her at their place near Nicholasville. "She was so* weak about the hind legs as a foal that she could scarcely stand," Krehbiel says. "Two weeks after she was foaled vets advised us to destroy her, as she couldnt possible amount to anything." But Golden Bolt grew into a particularly husky specimen and took three firsts, a second and two thirds from nine starts in good company last season. We suppose everyone knows that Bolingbroke was one of Equipoises stoutest staying sons. What we should like to know is how pedigree experts- explain the zip shown by Golden Bolt, Bolingpver and some others of his progeny. Nobody seemed to think he would be a factor for speed. It must all be pretty disconcerting for Virginians, who breed for dual purpose horses that can cover a lot of real estate in point-to-points if they fail on the flat. Lincoln isnt the only Chicago club that is improving its property. Hawthorne has under construction stalls for 300 more horses at the meet which opens September 7, the day after Labor Day, and runs 35 days. It also is filling in some of the ground to the South of the park for future development. Bill Johnston of the Sportsmans track has in mind moving the finish 35 feet toward the clubhouse turn for the meet that begins October 17 and extends 24 days through November 12. This would make it possible to eliminate the present official tower and replace it with a . modern structure atop the clubhouse. It is planned to build an entire new stand and club at Sportsmans within the next several years, and to construct a chute for races at six furlongs. "I look for a good season in Chicago," Johnston said. "The play and crowds do not seem to increase on Saturdays as-they did in the past, but the week days are very good." Johnston is not an advocate of night racing, though he believes that eventually much of the sport will be presented under the lights. "Football, baseball and other sports are scheduling more night games each year," he observes. "Racing will get around to it in time." AAA Turf ana: Ksar of Audley and Espino Gold are two sires now in training at Chicago tracks. Each has 49 foals, the former a Nancy Fly filly. . . . Old timers can remember when Illinois tried licensed off-the-course play, with disastrous consequences. ... A Chicago trainer recently was discharged because he did not claim a friends horse. ... Washington restaurants have been varnished. . . . John Jackson is providing for the Precision Camera at Arlington Park. . . . Alsabs Day is the first stakes performer to commute between Washington Park and the Detroit Fair Grounds. . . . Alsab colts outnumber fillies 8 to 2 at his owners farm. . . . Apprentice Logan Batcheller, of Missouri, is in good form at Lincoln, and in fact is the national leader.
