Coaching Club American Oaks Candidates Clash Gay Mood, Flower Bed, Sunny Vale Vie in Motto Purse at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 19. — A preview of the Coaching Club American Oaks accidently moves into prominence at the Nassau County course tomorrow when the scheduled feature, the Lucky Draw Purse, failed to attract a representative field. The Lucky Draw, named for George D. Wideners gallant old campaigner, was fashioned for three-year-olds and over at the mile and. one furlong distance. "When the nominations closed on Tuesday, but three named were found on the list, Conniver, Alairne and Make-TJp Man. Racing secretary John B. Campbell immediately canceled the offering and moved the filly race to the front; The Motto Purse is for three-year-old fillies, who have never won four races other than claiming. When the entries were tabulated nine were made eligible, of whom seven are Oaks candidates. In this lot are Tassel, owned by James Cox Brady; George D. Wideners Show Time, Walter P. Chryslers Sub, John S. Phipps Gay Mood, Dell Stables Flower Bed, C. V. Whitneys Naso-phar and Flying Ship, owned by Ogden Phipps. The two others named tomorrow but not eligible for the Oaks are the Brook-meade Stables Sunny Vale and Blue Row, racing for the Lester Manor Stable. The Motto is at six furlongs and looked upon by owners and trainers as a perfect trial spot for the longer classic. Gay Mood is the top weight of this field and she is asked to concede from nine to 20 pounds to her contention. Despite this poundage the daughter of Mahmoud and Giggling looms up as the one to occupy the post of favoritism. In her next to last start at Jamaica, at six furlongs, she trounced some of the better-regarded members of her sex, such as Jazz Baby, Nell K., the Acorn winner; Fond Embrace and Boomdeay. However, the John S. Phipps representative is by no means a safe hazard, for she encounters some formidable opposition. Flower-Bed, making her New York debut under the Dell Stable colors, has to her credit some smashing efforts. Her last start was at Santa Anita. She finished unplaced in the Santa Susana Stakes, but previous to that raced in impressive fashion. She racked up two scores as a juvenile at Garden State in fast time. Sunny Vale, homebred of the Brook-meade Stable, under 108 pounds, shapes up as a factor. This miss is steady going and capable of holding her own in this lot. The Requital drew two of the original nominees for the Lucky Draw, Make-TJp Man and Alairne. The Requital is over the mile distance and attracted 11 starters. This event shapes up as a race that could provide a spirited finish.
