Giants Beat Cubs in 10th Inning, 9-6 Mays Home Run T Scores Three Runs Leonard Charged With Loss After Jeffcoats Two-Run Blast Ties Count in Ninth By the United Press Rookie Willie Mays fifth major league home run with two men on in the tenth inning salvaged a 9 to 6 victory for the New York Giants yesterday over the Cubs. The blow came after Leo Durochers leading hurler, Sal Maglie, had been knocked out by the North Siders. The Giants had held a lead throughout the game, played before 8,634 ladies day fans, but Hal Jeffcoats second homer of the season after Bob Ramazzotti had doubled tied the count in the ninth. Big Dutch Leonard, the Wrigleys relief ace, became the fourth Cub hurler in the tenth. Hank Thompson grounded out, but Whitey Lockman and pinch hitter Rafe Noble singled. Then Mays, who had struck out three times, belted the ball deep into the right field bleachers to saddle Leonard with his second defeat against four wins. George Spencer, who relieved Maglie with one out in the sixth inning, was credited with the victory, his fourth of the season against one loss. In the tenth, he retired the Cubs in order. Gives Up Four Hits Spencer went four and two-thirds innings, giving up four hits, but only the two runs resulting from Jeffcoats homer. He struck out two and walked two. Maglie was charged with the Cubs first four runs. He walked Gene Hermanski and Bruce Edwards to open the sixth and then was touched for a single by Eddie Miksis for one run. Bob Ramazzotti walked and George Spencer took over, forcing Hank Sauer to hit into a double play. Three Cub runs resulted from second inning singles by Hermanski, Edwards and Bob Borkowski sandwiched around Eddie Miksis fielders choice, plus Maglies balk, which let Miksis score. The Giants smacked starting pitcher, John Klippstein with a five-run fourth inning. Alvin Dark singled and reached third on Don Muellers infield out. Hank Thompson walked and both scored on Whitey Lock-mans double. Wes Westrum walked and three counters resulted from Monte Irvins ninth homer of the year. Bill Rigneys second four bagger this season in the fifth was the Giants sixth marker.
